Rams dominate at York

TORONTO – The Rams were in enemy territory Saturday night, as they battled it out with the York Lions for this second time this season. They would come away victorious with a 93-65 win thanks to a dominant second half performance.

The Rams would open up the scoring with a three from forward Keevon Small (Montreal, Que.) but would then go back and forth with the Lions. The first quarter would turn into a three-point battle as both teams looked to get into their groove, coming up short on their shots. Many of the first quarter points for both teams came from free throws as this was a foul-filled quarter. The Lions would ultimately edge out the Rams for a 17-16 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Lions would come out hot in the second as Prince Kamunga would connect from beyond the arc. York would proceed to go on a 7-0 run before hitting some foul trouble that would cut their lead down to two at the five-minute mark. This would be Kamunga's quarter as he would continue to drain threes for the Lions. He would end with 17 points, including four three-pointers. The Rams would continue to build up their presence but would trail 33-37 going into the half.

The tides would shift in the second half in favour of the Rams. Guard Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) would open the quarter with a three, as the Rams would go on a 4-0 run to tie up the game. Frederick would finish with 23 points and nine rebounds. Some smart play making would give the Rams a four-point lead halfway through the quarter. It would be all Rams for the remaining five minutes as the Lions' defence began to crumble. The Rams would take a 10-point lead into the last quarter.

The Lions would add offensive struggles to their defensive struggles in the fourth posting only 14 points compared to Ryerson's 32. It would be all Rams in the fourth, creating turnovers and downing the threes. A lot of Ryerson's points would come from guard Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) who could not be stopped or slowed down from beyond the arc. He would end the game with a career-high 37 points, including seven made threes, seven assists, and four rebounds. Kokko was a true game-changer in the Rams 93-65 win.

The Rams are back on the road as they head west to face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Wednesday November 20th, 2019 at 8:00 pm ET. Catch the action live on OUA.tv.
