Rams win second straight, hand Lakers first loss

NORTH BAY, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team picked up their second straight win on Friday night, defeating Nipissing 3-1 on the road.

Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto) had a game-high 26.5 points and 20 kills to lead the way for Ryerson. First year outside hitter Derek Webster (Ottawa, Ont.) had an efficient game, hitting 0.438% with 10 kills.

Nipissing opened the game strong, establishing an early 8-5 lead, but Ryerson was up to the task to answer and rallied back to hold a slim 16-15 advantage at the technical.

After a Lakers attack error gave the Rams a 20-18 lead, a pair of kills from Ketrzynski and Webster opened the game up and helped Ryerson finish with a 25-20 win.

In the second it was Nipissing who led 16-12 at the technical timeout, but Ryerson responded to tie the set at 22-22. After exchanging points, Nipissing posted back-to-back kills to take a 24-23 lead before a service ace sealed the 25-23 win for the home side to tie the match at 1-1.

A lineup change in the third set by the Rams helped give them an energy boost as Omari Young (Toronto) made his first appearance in the match. He recorded a block to give Ryerson an early 10-5 lead and the Rams headed to the technical up by four.

Nipissing rallied to tie the set at 18-18 but Ryerson handled the pressure well and was able to score seven of the next 10 points to win it 25-21 and take a 2-1 match lead.

The Rams found themselves trailing 16-11 at the fourth set technical but stormed out of the break to tie the set at 18-18. Saad Shaikh (Mississauga, Ont.) dropped a service ace to give Ryerson a narrow lead and put some doubt into the Lakers' minds.

After battling back and forth the teams were tied at 23-23 when Ketrzynski stepped to the service line and dealt out an ace. His next serve forced a free ball over from Nipissing and Webster put it to the floor to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Handing Nipissing their first loss of the season, Ryerson improves to 2-1. The Rams will look to continue their winning streak next week when they visit the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, November 8th.
