TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves for their first game of a double header Friday evening. The Rams would take this one in dominating fashion, winning by 31 points, 94-63.
After a disappointing loss on the road to the Brock Badgers last weekend, the Rams were looking to get back on track and they looked stellar on the court against a struggling Thunderwolves team. Fourth-year forward
Bronwyn Williams (Toronto) would win the tip off for the Rams which would lead to a quick jumper by guard
Stefanija Mrvaljevic (Mississauga, Ont.) to get the Rams on the board first. That would set the tone for the rest of the game. Lakehead would get on the board a couple minutes later with a three-pointer. By the halfway mark of the quarter the Rams would lead 14-3. Lakehead would struggle against a relentless Rams defence. They would only be able to add 10 more points, trailing 28-13 at the end of the first.
The second quarter would flow much like the first. Second-year forward
Rachel Farwell (Rothesay, N.B) would get on the board first with a three that took a funny spin, almost falling out, but eventually dropping in the basket. Lakehead would have trouble getting a shot off on time and keeping possession of the ball. Rookie guard
Taite Cleland (Ancaster, Ont.) would have a spectacular play a little over five minutes into the quarter, stealing the ball, driving the basket, getting the two points plus the foul. Lakehead would finish with 29 turnovers compared to Ryerson's 17.
"Our team played really well, we got a lot of offensive opportunities," said Farwell. "My team gave me a lot of good looks that I was able to capitalize on."
Farwell had a big game getting a career high 18 points and having a perfect shooting percentage.
"She's a shooter, and we saw that today" said head coach
Carly Clarke. "It hasn't been falling for her lately, but today she got into a rhythm and the shots kept coming."
Lakehead would seem to liven up in the third with some success from beyond the arc from Nikki Ylagan and Sofia Lluch. Ylagan would lead the Thunderwolves with 20 points, 18 of those points coming from three-pointers. Despite the Thunderwolves' jump in offence, the Rams had too big of lead and would continue their dominance taking the third 75-39.
Despite the sizeable lead the Rams had, they did not slow down or let up but continued to play to win. Play would stop around three minutes into the quarter as Lakehead player Tiffany Reynolds would go down with a serious injury on her upper right shoulder area. She would end up leaving the game with a sling. The Thunderwolves' would try their best to stay in the game but nothing could take this game away from the Rams. The final score would end up being 94-63.
The Rams are back in action Saturday, November 2nd, at 6:00 p.m. for their second game against the Thunderwolves as they look to get the series sweep.
