GUELPH, Ont. - After netting seven goals in their last game against Windsor, the Ryerson Rams had a taste of their own medicine on Wednesday, losing 7-3 to the Guelph Gryphons.
Karli Nummikoski (Thunder Bay, Ont.) collected a goal and an assist and
Madison Lalonde (Blenheim, Ont.) secured two assists in the defeat.
Some sticks and bodies in the shooting lane kept the Rams from converting early in the first period. After Ryerson killed off a penalty and survived a late scrum, the period seemed destined to end scoreless. But in the dying seconds,
Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) beat the buzzer on a bank shot from behind the net to put the Rams up. The first period concluded 1-0 with Ryerson outshooting Guelph 6-3.
A quick breakaway from Guelph's Stephanie Gava led to a tie 1-1 game early in the second.
Ryerson refused to let the draw last long, pouring on pressure in Guelph's zone.
Karli Nummikoski capitalized on a rebound from a scrum to regain the lead for the Rams. Just 13 seconds later,
Olivia Giardetti (Whitby, Ont.) fired a puck inside the post on the far side, making it 3-1. A pair of steady penalty kills left the Rams up by two entering the third.
Almost halfway into the final frame, Guelph finally managed to squeak in a powerplay goal. Lauren Ianni made it 3-2 just six seconds into their powerplay. This goal started the landslide which would result in a total of six unanswered Guelph goals throughout the final 20 minutes of Wednesday's contest.
Despite
Fanny Vigeant's (St-Hyacinthe, Que.) stellar goaltending, Ryerson's penalty trouble was too much to handle. Of the eight minors which the Rams accumulated, five came in the turbulent third period. Although the Rams' penalty kill was effective throughout the first two periods, the 10 penalty minutes in the final frame led to three goals for the Gryphons. The momentum from these markers led to another goal and an empty-netter. When the dust settled, the scoreboard read 7-3 for the Guelph Gryphons.
