TORONTO – The Rams hosted the Windsor Lancers Friday evening for their second home game of the season. Ryerson would get a big 7-1 home win with a strong team effort, having six players add goals.
"Windsor is an up-and-coming team, I got a lot of respect for their coach," said head coach
Lisa Haley. "They are on a bit of a journey, similar to the one we've taken already."
The first period started in favour of the Rams. After a 2-0 loss to Toronto on Wednesday, the Rams came out with some fire, wanting to win this match. The Rams got on the board first as fifth-year senior
Karli Nummikoski (Thunder Bay, Ont.) got her first of the season, capitalizing on a turnover. The period would continue with a lot of back and forth by both teams with no real offensive opportunities. Finally, with two minutes left in the period, first-year forward Maggie Peterson would tie the game for the Lancers. The game would remain 1-1 at the end of twenty minutes.
"We've learned a lot from our previous two games," said Haley. "I think we're starting to remember how hard it is to get points, and how tough you have to play on both sides of the puck."
The second period would see a flurry of goals for the Rams. First-year forward
Mia Morano (Toronto) would get her first as a Ram as she deked out the goalie and slid it into the empty net. Talking about her goal Morano said: "I was sort of surprised but as soon as I saw the defender stepped up on Baxter, I was like 'it's my time to go'."
A couple seconds later, second-year forward
Erika Crouse (Kirkland Lake, Ont.) would get her first of the season on a tip in from a
Mariah Hinds (Toronto) shot. Halfway through the period fifth-year defender
Laura Ball (Toronto) would get her first of the season on another tip in from a
Teagan Gartley (Kitchener, Ont.) shot. The Lancers would not be able to answer back, and the score would remain 4-1 at the end of the period.
The Rams would continue to dominate in the third. First-year forward
Emily Baxter (Oakville, Ont.) would also get her first as a Ram less than five minutes into the period as she went for the five-hole.
Halfway through the period third-year defender Hinds would get her second of the season on a breakaway from a turnover in the Lancers zone. Hinds would add another six minutes later with an empty netter officially ending the game with a 7-1 score.
"What we're trying to do in a situation where you feel like you've got the game under control is to stick to your habits and that the puck is doing the work and that it's not becoming an individual effort and respecting how hard you have to work on the defensive side too," said Haley.
The Rams are on the road next as they head to Guelph to face the Gryphons on Wednesday, October 30th at 7:30 pm ET. Watch the action on OUA.tv.
