TORONTO - After five one-goal deficits and five ties, the Ryerson Rams pushed the Toronto Varsity Blues to overtime before falling 6-5 on Saturday night.
After playing York last night, the Rams picked up four points this weekend and sit at a 2-2-1 record.Â
The Rams were in the hole early when a speeding David Thomson sneaked one five-hole past
Troy Timpano (Pickering, Ont.).
After some scrappy play, Ryerson tried to tie it up. A powerplay came and went, and a
Cavin Leth (Taber, Alta.) chance went wide. Leth got another chance with a shot off a draw.
Marcus Hinds (Toronto) redirected the snapper for his first of the season.Â
Action went back and forth, forcing some athletic pad stops by Timpano. Evan MacEachern blasted a shot from the point to make it 2-1 for Toronto on a powerplay.
In the dying seconds of the first, the Rams struck back on a 5-on-3 when Mat Santos (Toronto) clanked in his second of the season. The 2-2 tie went into the first intermission. The back and forth nature of the first dictated the rest of the game.
Toronto's Thomson chipped in another about six minutes into the second, but the Blues' 3-2 lead did not last long, when the Rams' powerplay unit scored again.
Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont.) picked up his second tally in as many nights on a scrum to knot it up at 3-3.
Later in the second, Kyle Potts regained the Toronto lead on a rush. The Blues' 4-3 lead remained intact entering the third period. Â
Just four minutes into the final frame,
David Miller (Burlington, Ont.) buried a puck from
Gregory DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.), and the game was back to a draw.
Nathan Hudgin fired a shot past Timpano halfway through the third. Seeming like the dagger as the clock went down, Mat Santos tied it up yet again. His second of the match came with eight minutes to go, and the scoreboard read 5-5.
The clock continued to dwindle, and the game was bound for overtime.
Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) got a chance to end the game, but missed.
The puck eventually found Hudgin alone in front, and his backhand capped off the game in the extra frame.
The Rams will have a week to round out their game before visiting the Western Mustangs in London on Friday, October 25th.
