Rams shut out by no. 7 Gee-Gees

TORONTO - A three-goal effort and a clean sheet by the uOttawa Gee-Gees saw the Ryerson Rams women's soccer team suffer a 3-0 loss to the no.7 Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon at Downsview Park.

The Gee-Gees offensive pressure began just after the opening whistle, as Ottawa's Mikayla Morton (Courtice, Ont.) tallied the team's first goal of the match at the five-minute mark. Four minutes later, Gee-Gees powerhouse Emma Lefebvre (Kingston, Ont.) scored her first goal of the game to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Lefebvre would capitalize on another opportunity at the 50-minute mark, putting the Gee-Gees ahead by three with 40 minutes remaining in the match. Despite a strong push by the Rams in the latter half of the game, the Gee-Gees walked away with a 3-0 win.

Ryerson's Elisa Lapadula made nine saves including a point-blank stop in the 54th minute of the match on Ottawa's Delaney Rickert-Hall (Waterloo, Ont.). Rams striker Katie Joyce (Petty Harbour, NL.) tallied one shot in her first start of the season.

Third-year forward Maria Poveda (Mississauga, Ont.) had one shot and several other key chances in the match. Moving forward, Poveda says the team will need to work on their aggression in front of the net.

“We didn't have enough composure in front,” says Poveda. “We need to shoot a lot more. Not just the center forwards, either; it has to come from the center midfielders and the wide players. We need to be more aggressive in the box.”

The Rams' sights have shifted towards Sunday's matchup against the Carleton Ravens as the team hopes to walk away with a crucial three points on the weekend.

“Hopefully, against Carleton, we'll be able to capitalize on the opportunities we missed out on today,” says Rams head coach Natalie Bukovec. “Today, the team energy was good and the momentum was good — I hope we can build on that tomorrow.”

The Rams will hit the field to close out their weekend against Carleton on Sunday at Downsview Park. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM.
