TORONTO - Sierra Clancy's second-half goal was enough to give the Ryerson Rams the edge in a 1-0 victory over the RMC Paladins on Sunday.
The Rams started the game on a positive note, putting on pressure right off the top and controlling the ball well in the Paladins' zone. RMC, on the other hand, did a great job of pushing the Rams out to the wings and keeping the ball out of the middle.
As the half progressed, the Rams seemed to be more comfortable in the middle of the field, but RMC goalkeeper Claudia Rusu (Toronto, Ont.) shut the door and kept the game scoreless.
Rams midfield Anastasia Grekos had the chance to put her team on the board early in the second half, but Rusu made a stunning penalty kick save for the Paladins. Ryerson grew increasingly frustrated as the game went on, but the tides finally turned midway through the second half.
Joycelynn Brarr (Mississauga, Ont.) made an immediate impact after coming in as a substitution late in the match. Working inside the 18-yard box, Brarr set up midfielder Sierra Clancy (Waterloo, Ont.) for the only goal of the game, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute of the match.
“Joycelynn came on and made an immediate difference,” says Clancy. “She passed me the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and I took the shot. It was nice to have her come on and change the game."
The Rams walked away with a 1-0 victory, their first win in the month of September.
Ryerson head coach Natalie Bukovec says the biggest takeaway from the game was the consistent effort given by her players.
"RMC kept us on our toes, especially into the last 10 minutes of the game," says Bukovec. "We're going to continue to work on playing consistently and capitalizing on our opportunities."
The Rams will return to action on October 6, facing off against the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa.
