TORONTO - In one of the most complete efforts the team has seen this season, the Ryerson Rams claimed a 4-1 victory over the Queen's Gaels on Saturday at Downsview Park.
The Gaels opened the scoring at the eight-minute mark of the first half as Queen's striker Matthew Reale (Ancaster, Ont.) capitalized on a juicy net front rebound.
The Gaels' lead didn't hold for very long. Rams midfield Sean Fafinski (Toronto, Ont.) scored off a free kick to open the scoring for Ryerson in the 12th minute of the game.
“I scored a free kick goal last game so I was confident going in that I'd be able to do it,” recounts Fafinski. “I've done it a million times in practice, and I'm lucky it went through.”
Just two minutes later, Andrew Dias (Toronto, Ont.) netted his second of the season off a cross from Kai Martin (Toronto, Ont.). Martin finished the game with two assists on the match.
Dias' 14th-minute goal held through the remainder of the first half and the Rams took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Rams wasted no time getting back to work in the second half. Matthew Isabella (Brampton, Ont.) beat the Gaels' keeper one-on-one after receiving a long ball from Nathaniel Tambakis (Toronto, Ont.), giving Ryerson a 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute.
Akibul Hoque (Toronto, Ont.) scored an insurance goal off a pass from Martin in the 72nd minute to extend Ryerson's lead midway through the second half.
The Rams walked off the field with a 4-1 victory, having claimed their ninth win of the regular season.
Ryerson head coach Filip Prostran says the team continued to get better as the game went on.
“It's always a bit of a smokescreen when we play Queen's,” says Prostran. “But, we're lucky to have such a resilient and confident group that can easily bounce back when trailing in a game.”
The Rams will return to Downsview Park on Sunday afternoon to take on the RMC Paladins at 4:30 PM.
