Despite late push, Rams fall to Mustangs

LONDON, Ont. – Myles Charvis (Mississauga, Ont.) was one point off of matching a career best that he set just last night, but it was not enough for the victory as the Ryerson Rams lost 62-59 to the Western Mustangs Saturday night in London.

BOXSCORE

The 23-point night was just short of the career best 24-point performance Charvis put up Friday night against the Windsor Lancers. Both significantly bettered his previous landmark of 15 points. While he more than doubled the offensive output of the Mustangs' leading scorer, Henry Tan (Cookstown, Ont.) with 10, the Rams fell to a late charge for their first loss of the season.

The game got off to a slow start, offensively. Each side was putting up a strong defensive fight, keeping the scoring low. A strong three point percentage early, including two by Alex Coote (Vancouver, BC) saw the Mustangs command early. The Rams would begin to push back in the second quarter, ramping up their defensive presence with key rebounds and substitutions to inch closer to the equalizer at half.

In the third quarter, the game belonged to the Rams. Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) utilized his stature to transfer defensive rebounds into offensive pushes. A Charvis free throw would give the Rams their first lead since the first quarter.

Unfortunately, the Rams could not hold off Western for the final quarter. Leading by eight with 6:15 remaining, the Rams began to concede points to the Mustangs consistently. Back-to-back three-pointers by Eriq Jenkins (Windsor, Ont.) and Omar Shiddo (Toronto, Ont.) tied the game with 1:22 remaining. One last layup by Shiddo would give the lead back to the Mustangs and see the Rams close their road trip with the loss.

Now finished their season-opening road trip, the Rams are headed back to the Mattamy Athletic Centre for the first time this OUA season. The Rams are looking to #PackTheMAC as they raise their most recent OUA title banner and host their home opener against the Brock Badgers this Wednesday, November 8th.
