PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Ryerson women's soccer team missed the OUA playoffs by one point, but ended their season with a 1-0 victory over the Trent Excalibur.
The Rams [4-6-6] weren't in control of their own fate going into the crucial weekend, but came up clutch by beating Trent and Carleton the day before. Nipissing only needed to win one of their two games to clinch the final playoff berth, and did so in extraordinary fashion, steamrolling the RMC Paladins 8-1 on Sunday.
Diana Smiciklas scored the only goal of the game, during the 30th minute of the first half. Goalkeeper Stefanie Webster earned her second shutout in as many games, as the Rams won both games 1-0. Webster finishes the year with six shutouts.
The Rams failed to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year, but the first under Interim Head Coach Ramin Mohammadi. It is not known whether or not fourth year leading scorers Calaigh Copland and Andrea Raso will return for a fifth year of eligibility. Copland finished with five goals on the season and Raso had three.
This was the last game for fifth-years Rams Michelle Jatagandzidis and Samantha Zavaglia.
Ryerson missed an opportunity against RMC on Oct. 17, losing two points in the 89th minute to tie the Paladins, but also took good strides in the rebuilding process. The team was able to takes points from Toronto on Sept. 19, who was a nationally ranked team at the time.
The OUA playoffs get underway on Wednesday, as Nipissing takes on Toronto and Carleton hosts Laurentian. Toronto won the season series against the Lakers 1-0-1, while Laurentian finished 1-0-1 against Carleton.
