TORONTO — Nearly two hundred metres away, a familiar concert venue stands in the middle of Downsview Park, recovering from a previous storm.
The damage is mirrored on the neighbouring pitch, where portions of the fence struggle to stay upright. Despite the structures in desperate need of additional mending, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team continued to forge their own fortress.
The Bold convincingly defeated the Nipissing Lakers 4-0 on Saturday. With the victory, TMU extended its undefeated streak in home openers to five games.
TMU opened the scoring less than 11 minutes into the match. It began with a free kick set piece taken by
Aidan Hugo. When the Lakers' defence blocked the initial attempt, the ball bounced back to Hugo, who switched possession to the opposite side of the field. After the Bold crossed the ball to the far post, Exosse Kadibue reached out to get a touch on the ball. Kadibue's extension caused the ball to ricochet off the crossbar before falling on the other side. That's when
Luc Ihama put the rebound in the back of the net.
Less than 16 minutes later, Kadibue's efforts were rewarded when he received a pass on his right foot inside the 18-yard box. In the blink of an eye, Kadibue put the ball on his left foot and fired the ball past the Nipissing goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
TMU continued to apply pressure on the Nipissing backline in the second half.
Nabil Hakim displayed his touch on an impressive through ball to midfielder
Alexander Santillan. Without hesitation, Santillan crossed the ball to
Taha Ilyas, who unleashed a scorcher into the left corner.
The Bold may have saved its best goal for last when
Jamie Benayon-Abraham crossed a ball just in front of the six-yard box for
Noah Pickering, who finished with a beautiful volley to make it 4-0.
TMU improves to 2-0-1 - mirroring their exact record through the first three games of the 2025 season - and currently holds the first seed in the OUA's East standings.
