TORONTO — During a windy Saturday afternoon game at Downsview Park, the intensity between the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold and the Trent Excalibur men's soccer teams was palpable from the first whistle.
But by the end of the match, TMU ultimately lost 1-0, officially marking their first loss of the 2026 campaign.
The Bold entered the contest hoping to build on their momentum from last season, when they won both meetings against the Excalibur. Another victory would have extended their success against their Peterborough counterparts, while keeping this year's current undefeated record alive.
In the first half, the Excalibur applied early pressure, but the Bold responded just the same, keeping a composed presence, connecting passes as they aimed to keep the opposing attack at bay and look for an opening to strike of their own.
Near the 23rd minute, second-year
Tyler Yasaka accepted a pass from
Aidan Hugo, trying to connect with their leading scorer
Taha Ilyass until the ball was cleared over the crossbar by the Excalibur. The Trent offence also tried to get things going, but a strong Bold defence, highlighted by a clearance from
Hazim Kadib and a rebound grab by goalkeeper
Dante Ferraro, kept the ball out of the net.
TMU tallied one true shot on goal despite having four corners to try and get momentum going. By halftime, the two teams were at a 0-0 stalemate with neither side planning on budging.
At the start of the second half, the pressure cooker that was the pitch continued to turn up. Each team wanted to be the one to score first. Players made aggressive plays trying to turn things in their favour. Trent's
Sam Rankin was denied an opportunity in the 77th minute, then the ball travelled down the line to Warren Chambers, where
Luc Ihama was there to clear the ball.
It was truly anyone's game. However, in the dwindling minutes of regular time, Rankin made an attempt at the net but was denied by Ferraro. Trent's offence was able to regroup and take possession of the ball back when Chambers successfully crossed the ball to Leo Frans. With Frans in the right place at the right time, the forward bicycle-kicked the ball into the back corner of the net, putting Trent up 1-0.
The Bold fought to get themselves on the scoreboard with a free-kick opportunity in the 89th minute but were unsuccessful. They continued to push in the five minutes of added time but just could not break through the Trent defence.
