Bold earn 34-point win over Badgers

TORONTO—On a crisp autumn evening with October nearing its close, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team continued its strong start to the season, defeating the Brock University Badgers 74-40.

TMU's Myriam Kone led the charge for the Bold this evening recording 18 points, while Catrina Garvey followed closely with 16.

Back on the road for their second OUA game of the season, the Bold entered the matchup riding an eight-game winning streak following a dominant victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks.

In their previous meeting, the defending OUA champions came away with a 70-54 win over the Badgers on home court. Despite the Bold's strong start to the 2026-27 season, Brock was looking to put up a fight and challenge the reigning champions.

The Badgers asserted their offensive presence early in the first quarter, holding the Bold in check as they struggled to find their rhythm on the floor.

With six minutes remaining, however, an impressive defensive play from Garvey translated to a  Kone fast break, providing the Bold with a much-needed momentum shift. Kait Nichols began to lock down the Badgers on defence, while Garvey found confidence in her shot.

This surge allowed the Bold to close the gap, but Brock continued to push back, leaving TMU trailing 19-13 after the first quarter.

The second quarter brought a renewed start from the Bold, feeding off their late first-quarter run.

Kone attacked the rim early, while a transition sequence between Hailey Franco DeRyck and Garvey created another opportunity for the Bold.

Garvey continued to light up the court, recording eight first-half points, including two three-pointers. Franco De Ryck added some points in the paint and Nichols drew an and-one to force a Brock timeout with 2:57 remaining in the half.

The timeout did little to slow TMU's momentum as Juliette Gargya came up with a steal and converted an and-one opportunity of her own.

By the end of the second quarter, TMU had fully taken control. Kone dribbled her way through the Brock defence, leading the Bold with 14 points in the first half.

After committing seven turnovers in the first quarter, TMU tightened up its ball security, recording just one in the second. Entering the half, it was a 38-23 game for TMU.

The third quarter was a continuation of Bold excellence, performing a masterclass on both sides of the court.

A Brock turnover to open the third quarter led to a Franco DeRyck layup, while Garvey continued to find success beyond the arc. With the Bold building its advantage, head coach Stefanija Mrvaljevic gave the bench some minutes.

Ella McDonald made an immediate impact, knocking down a three-pointer, while Lily Blondon found her way into the paint for two. These contributions highlighted the Bold's roster depth as they continued to pull away from the Badgers, taking a 58-37 lead into the fourth quarter.

TMU put the icing on the cake in the final frame, continuing to find offensive opportunities and shutting Brock with their defence.

Franco DeRyck found back-to-back looks at the basket, and Nichols and Garvey showcased their chemistry with a transition play. Even with a comfortable lead, the Bold continued to fight for every possession.

Their hard work paid off, and the Bold secured a 74-40 victory, adding another regular season win.

The Bold will continue their early season road trip heading to Hamilton, Ont., to face the McMaster Marauders on Saturday. The Halloween matchup is set to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. at the Burridge Gym. You can catch all of the LIVE action on OUA.tv.
