Rhooms Ties TMU Program Record in Dominant Win Over Lancers

WINDSOR, Ont. — The No. 10 nationally ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team secured a statement 93-69 win over the University of Windsor Lancers.

Coming off a tough two-loss weekend in the capital, the Bold looked to regain confidence against the Lancers.

Aaron Rhooms led the Bold with a 28-point performance and tied the program record for most career field goals in TMU men's basketball history at 289, matching Boris Bakovic (2006-10).

Additionally, Deandre Goulbourne put up a dominant 23 points, marking a new OUA career-high, along with seven rebounds.

TMU took some time to find its rhythm in the opening quarter, as both teams got off to a slow start. The Bold battled on the offensive glass but couldn't convert.

Rhooms had a few key plays, but the quarter remained tight. In the final two minutes, the Lancers outplayed the Bold, and TMU closed the first quarter down 8-13.

Goulbourne was a standout in the second quarter, giving the Bold the spark they needed. He ignited the offense with a three-pointer and a strong finish at the rim. Rhooms quickly followed with a layup to tie the game, forcing a Windsor timeout as momentum shifted in TMU's favour.

From there, things remained tight, with both teams trading baskets, but a few costly fouls committed by the Bold allowed the Lancers to push ahead temporarily.

Unsatisfied, TMU capped off the half with an offensive run to secure a narrow 33-30 lead after the second quarter.

The Bold took over in the third quarter, delivering a stellar offensive performance that shifted the course of the game. Goulbourne continued to take command of the floor, while Gabriel Gutsmore and Aidan Wilson showcased their skills.

The depth of the Bold roster overwhelmed the Lancers. Rhooms was automatic from beyond the arc in the third, hitting four three-pointers, while Kevin Toth followed with back-to-back threes. TMU went 100 percent from three in the third quarter, outshooting the Lancers 38-22.

TMU closed out the third frame ahead, 71-52.

The Bold maintained control in the final frame, building on their lead while allowing contributions from the bench. Imisi Montunde got things started from the free-throw line, and Goulbourne followed up by attacking the rim.

Rhooms refused to let off the pressure and knocked down another three. He then finished in the paint with a historic basket to tie the all-time career field goals record for the Bold.

As time ran down, Toth and Andrejs Silconoks added points, while Landon Wright wrapped up the game with a three-pointer and free throws. In the end, the Bold closed the night with a decisive 93-69 win over Windsor.

TMU will continue their weekend in Southern Ontario, facing the leading OUA West University of Western Mustangs in London, Ont. Game time on Saturday, Jan. 24, is set for 8:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall. Catch the matchup online on OUA.tv.
