No. 5 Bold Defeat Ravens 66-43 for the First Time Since 2022

Ottawa — The No. 5 nationally ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team defeated the Carleton University Ravens 66-43 on Saturday, their first victory over Carleton since March 23, 2022.

Catrina Garvey led TMU with 23 points, Myriam Kone added 14 points and six steals, and Hailey Franco DeRyck recorded nine points and 18 rebounds.

The last time these two teams met was in the OUA playoff semi-finals last season, where the Bold fell 76-60.

Taking to the Ravens' Nest, the evening matchup carried significant weight for both teams. TMU entered the contest atop the OUA Central with a 12-1 record, while Carleton sat in second in the OUA East with a 9-4 record.

Kait Nichols opened the scoring with two early plays to kick off the first quarter. The game pace was quick during the first few possessions, but the Bold slowed things down with Garvey making a couple shots and Franco DeRyck battling for rebounds. First year guard Ella McDonald also trusted in her shot and netted a three.

TMU finished the opening quarter strong. Jessica Keripe added a bucket down low, and Myriam Kone netted a mid-range jump shot to wrap up the first. The Bold were ahead 23-10 after the first 10 minutes.

Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter until the Bold broke through in the seventh minute when Franco DeRyck headed to the free-throw line.

Eternati Willock provided energy off the bench, but Carleton began to build momentum. Following a key timeout from head coach Carly Clarke, TMU's offence got rolling once again. Nichols found Garvey for a fast break jumper, and McDonald drained another 3-pointer.

TMU entered halftime leading 35-26.

In the third frame, the Bold took their game to another level. They held the Ravens to only four points, while also excelling offensively.

Franco DeRyck landed a hook shot while Garvey knocked down some jumpers. Kone finished a fast-break layup, and Willock muscled her way through the paint. TMU stretched their lead to 50-30 after the third quarter.

Carleton tried to minimize their deficit at the start of the fourth, but Garvey denied them a chance, shooting with confidence from beyond the arc. Kone continued to contribute from the mid-range, cushioning their lead. The Bold then turned to their bench, who successfully ran out the clock.

TMU secured a 66-43 victory, completing a weekend sweep in Ottawa.

The Bold will take the week to prepare for another difficult weekend on the road. They will head south to face the University of Windsor Lancers on Friday, Jan. 23. Game time at the Toldo Lancer Centre is set for 6 p.m. Support the Bold from afar and catch all the action on OUA.tv.
