TORONTO — The No. 6 ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team earned their third straight victory, defeating the Nipissing Lakers 2-0 in a physical matchup.
After taking home a 3-0 victory against the RMC Paladins a day prior, the Bold built off that game's success into the contest versus the Lakers.
Both teams came out strong and opened the match with a lot of intensity. The Bold demonstrated their speed within the first 30 minutes of the match featuring many high speed ball chases down the right wing, notably by
Justin Santos.
"That's just something Santos does all the time if you give him the ball in space," said Bold forward
Cyrus Rollocks with a smile. "He's going to take the player on one-by-one and nine times out of 10 he is going to take him down the line."
The next 15 minutes was a back-and-forth game and despite pressure from the Bold, the half ended in a 0-0 deadlock.
The first goal of the game came from
Justin Santos in the 47th minute, who capitalized on a penalty kick against the Lakers, firing the ball straight past the Lakers' goaltender.
What could have been a dangerous shot from the Lakers, was shut down by the Bold. TMU weathered the storm, by dropping back when needed, warding off the opposition and pushing them back towards their zone
Two common themes with the Bold in the past three games was their physical dominance on field and keeping up the tempo.
"We've got some really great athletes on this team," said Head Coach Fil Prostran. "We press a lot, so that I think encourages them to use those athletic abilities."
The second and final goal came from Rollocks who toed it into the net off an assist by
Jamie Benayon-Abraham.
The game ended with the Bold up by two and a clean sheet for goaltender
Dante Ferraro.
For the Bold, their goal remains the same.
"Our future hope is to see a ring at the end of season," said Santos
"That's it, two rings, that's it," added Rollocks.
Next up for the Bold is a matchup against Laurentian on October 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Admission for fans is free.
