Bold Fall 2-1 to Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team fell just short to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Sunday afternoon, 2-1.

The Bold entered the game on a high, having taken down their cross-city rivals, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, just two days prior.

It was clear in the first half that TMU had carried that positive momentum into their matchup against the Ridgebacks. The team carefully dissected their opponents' defence, waiting patiently for scoring opportunities.

That patience led to multiple chances early, including a header from forward Aalayah Lully that flew just north of the net.

The Ridgebacks countered with some offence of their own, but Bold goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci stayed poised in her box, diving for balls and killing the momentum of Ontario Tech.

With both teams playing impressive defence, the first half ended scoreless.

The ice would be broken less than two minutes into the second half, though, as the Ridgebacks' Emma Dang snuck one past Paolucci to give her team the lead.

For the rest of the second half, the Bold fought hard to tie the game back up. They controlled offensive possession and found open look after open look at the net. The team logged a whopping 16 shots in the frame, easily topping Ontario Tech's three.

That offensive dominance is a familiar look for this TMU team, who have scored 16 goals this season–good for fourth in the province.

Unfortunately for the Bold, the Ridgebacks were able to counteract all of those scoring chances with some stellar play from goalkeeper Talia Hopkin. Despite all of the open looks, TMU just wasn't able to find the back of the net.

As the game entered extra time, Mary Nicolaou snagged a goal on the counter attack to extend the Ridgebacks lead to 2-0.

Just a few minutes later, the Bold's Natalie Moynihan scored a header off of a free kick by Taliyah Walker to get her team on the board. The second-year midfielder has netted three goals in only seven games played this year, already surpassing her single contribution from last season.

The effort from Moynihan was too little too late, though, as the final whistle blew shortly after the goal. The Bold's record regresses now to 3-3-1, ranking them sixth in the OUA Eastern Conference standings.

The team now has six days to rest, before taking on the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees at home on September 27. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Downsview Park.
