TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team played its final regular-season game on Sunday, facing the No. 4-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues. The Bold earned a hard-fought victory, winning 4-3 in overtime on senior night.
Prior to the game, the Bold celebrated their graduating seniors,
Emily Baxter,
Megan Breen,
Payton Kerr,
Brooke Michaud,
Mia Morano, and
Alexia Stratos, who have each been important contributors to the Bold over the past several years.Â
"Every single one of those six graduating players has put a lot into our program. They've sacrificed a lot, and it's great to reward them with a win," said Head coach
Lisa Haley.
In the first period, both teams could not generate any chances around the net, but the Bold did a good job defending Stratos in net.Â
The Bold headed back into the dressing room hoping to reassess and return stronger in the second.
In the second,
Gaby Gareau intercepted a pass and found herself on a breakaway to net the first goal for the Bold at 19:18.
The Bold and Varsity Blues played aggressively and took multiple penalties against each other. Looking to capitalize, the Varsity Blues scored the tying goal late in the second period.
Late in the second, the Bold worked hard to keep the score tied but the Varsity Blues managed to tip in the leading goal right before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
With 13 minutes left in the third, Breen and Baxter teamed up to tie up the game, as Breen registered her sixth goal of the season.
Minutes later the Blues were able to tip in their third goal of the night, leaving the Bold with only a few minutes left to tie up the game once again.
With time winding down, the Bold felt the win slipping away until seniors Breen and Kerr got to work with 30 seconds left.
Kerr recorded her ninth goal of the season and tied the game, sending the two teams into overtime.
In overtime, the Bold continued to double down on defence and it paid off, as first-year defender
Taliya Hildebrandt scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Baxter.
Now, coming off back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked teams, the Bold will turn their focus to preparing for the playoffs. The Bold will travel to Kingston, Ont. to face the Queen's Gaels in the opening round of the playoffs, with the date and time to be announced.
