Bold Upset Nationally-Ranked Golden Hawks With 3-2 Overtime Win

WATERLOO, Ont. —The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team upset the No. 9-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks with a 3-2 overtime win.

Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start, struggling to get shots off. In the first period, the Bold only got off six shots, while Laurier sneaked in nine.

At 5:35 in the first period, Lauren McEachen scored a nice one-timer, her second of the season. It was assisted by TMU's Cailey Davus and Emma Macgregor. Nearing the end of the first, the Golden Hawks responded and tied the game at 16:22. The first period closed off ended with an even game.

In the second period, Laurier took control of the ice, firing 11 shots. They dominated play, keeping the puck mostly in the Bold's zone. TMU did a good job at killing Laurier's two power plays. TMU's goalie Lauren Griffin also kept the Bold's net secure, jumping on pucks to prevent Laurier from stealing the lead. Griffin accumulated a total of 19 saves in the second period.

The game remained tied at 1-1 after the second.

The Bold began the third period with some penalty struggles, presenting the Golden Hawks with power plays. Despite this, TMU was able to defend their end of the ice, pushing hard defensively.

Taking advantage of a late power play, Megan Breen netted a nice ricochet goal assisted by Emily Baxter at 12:42, giving the Bold a 2-1 lead. However, with less than a minute remaining, Laurier managed to score a last-minute goal, forcing the game to overtime, 2-2.

In overtime, the Bold had a few scares, but Griffin held her own. The Bold were presented with a power play with four minutes remaining in overtime. Baxter sniped in a goal at 3:33 assisted by Breen and Ahalya Julien-Mediros to claim the win, 3-2.

The Bold will wrap up their regular season, hosting their cross-city rivals the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday, Feb. 16. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m.
