Bold Take Nationally Ranked Gaels to Overtime

TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team lost 3-2 in overtime against the No. 3 nationally ranked Queen's University Gaels on Saturday night.

The Bold faced the Gaels for the second time this season after losing in a shootout in their earlier matchup. They came into today's game with a next player up mentality.

"It was all hands on deck," said head coach Lisa Haley. "We're pretty banged up right now. We have a few players out for various reasons as well. Everybody was stepping up into whatever role needed to be filled."

The first period started with the Bold bringing on the pressure and outshooting the Gaels early on.

The Bold continued to make Queen's goaltender Alexis Jandciu work for it with quality shots taken by Megan Bergmanis, Jayden Fox and Neely Van Volsen.

TMU finally broke through when Ava Caputo opened the scoring. After a scramble in front of the net sent the puck loose, Daily Chinnick fired a shot that Queen's couldn't clear out of their defensive zone. With Jandciu left without her stick and traffic piled up in the crease, Caputo managed to lift the puck through the chaos up and into the net.

"I've been waiting to score this year, so it was like a monkey right off my back," said Caputo.

The period closed out with the Bold up 1-0, and up in shots 15-7.

The Bold continued to stay strong with everyone showing up and continuing to send shots the Gaels way.

In a series of dangerous plays by Queen's, TMU was able to wade off the shots, with Bold goaltender Katie Frost making a final catch to end the Queen's reign in the offensive third.

The Bold  sent a puck out of play, taking a penalty for delay of game and putting TMU on their first penalty kill. Although the Bold successfully cleared the puck out twice, with 40 seconds left on the power play, the Gaels were able to get one past Frost.

A chance for TMU came on a one-on-one opportunity by Kalysta Song, but the puck rang off the post.

A tripping penalty called on the Gaels saw the Bold on their first  power play of the game. However, in a turn of events, the Gaels picked up momentum that was missing at the beginning of the game and Scarlett Nowakowski scored a short-handed goal putting the Bold down 2-1 by the end of the middle frame.

In the third period, the Bold kept their foot on the gas, not losing momentum despite finding themselves down. On a one-on-one breakaway, Megan Bergmanis raced down the ice, beating Jandciu to the net.

"We needed that tying goal and I saw the opportunity and just needed to take it," said Bergmanis.

For the rest of the period, both teams couldn't find the back of the net, resulting in overtime.

The Bold took solid shots, but the Gaels were able to capture the puck and score the winning goal. Despite the loss, the team displayed strong offensive pressure, almost matching the Gaels in shots, 38-33.

TMU is looking to come out stronger in the new year.

"A great word to describe our group right now is resilience," said Haley. "We've faced a lot of adversity with a lot of injuries. There is a lot of belief in the room, there is a no quit attitude about us and that comes from our leadership group and right down to every single player on the roster."

Up next, the Bold will play the Western Mustangs on Friday Jan. 9. The time is set for 7 p.m. Fans can catch the game on OUA.tv.
