Bold Blank Warriors as Edmonds Sets Program Wins Record

TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team closed out their final game of the year in dominant fashion, shutting out the Waterloo Warriors 3-0, extending their win streak to six games.

This night marked a milestone for TMU goaltender Kai Edmonds, who recorded his 50th career OUA win, setting a new program record.

The Bold entered the matchup riding the momentum of the previous night's 5-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons and they carried the same pace into today's contest.

In the first period, the Bold came out with speed and intensity. Seven minutes in, Will Portokalis worked his way around the right circle, shielding the puck before finding captain Connor Bowie in the slot for the opening goal.

In repeat fashion, later in the period on the power play, Joseph Ianniello fed Bowie from the right circle and Bowie fired in the puck from the slot for his second goal of the night.

Since returning to the lineup, Bowie has been a welcome presence. He has played six games, registering three goals and two assists and the Bold have been undefeated with him back on the ice.

"He's our captain for a reason," said Duco. "He is the emotional heartbeat of our team. He's an absolute bulldog out there. He plays hard, fast and he can score. He's ultra competitive and he's got a hunger and desire to win and be great, so he's an easy guy to follow and someone we are really fortunate to have on our team."

TMU led 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The Bold maintained control in the second. Sixteen minutes in, Jaden Raad sliced through Waterloo's defence and set up Brock McLeod, who fired a shot into the top right corner past Waterloo goaltender Dan Murphy.

McLeod, playing his final year of eligibility with the Bold after spending his first four years with the York Lions, was elated to score his first goal with the Blue and Gold.

"It felt awesome," said McLeod. "When I think about our team, I see the reaction from the bench and from the guys not playing. That speaks to the type of people we have and so just to see their reaction just made it more special."

The middle frame ended with Bold up 3-0.

The Warriors found no answers in the final period. TMU locked down defensively, limiting Waterloo to just five shots in the final frame and protecting the shutout and the win for Edmonds.

"It's been really special," said Edmonds, reflecting on his time so far in the program. "It's been a place where I've been able to be a starting goalie for most of my time here and it's just been really special to be able to grow my game and with my teammates as well."

Duco praised Edmonds' impact both on and off the ice.

"He's had a pretty remarkable university career here and we've been very fortunate to have a front-row seat and be able to watch him," said Duco. "Speaking to him as a person, he comes in with a smile on his face every day and he's a hard worker. There is no ego or arrogance. When he doesn't start he cheers on his teammates. He's just great all around and I can't be happier for him."

Bowie echoed the sentiment.

"He is a huge part of the reason our program is what it is today," said Bowie. "He's an unbelievable player, a great person and super solid in the crease, always giving us a chance to win."

The Bold outshot the Warriors 53-20, showcasing their offensive strength and defensive structure that have defined their recent surge. After a slow start to the season, things are shaping up as TMU enters the December break as a connected, confident group.

"The biggest thing for us, and it might be cliché, is we need everybody going," said Duco regarding how they will continue this streak into the new year. "If all 20 players on that night are playing to their best potential, we feel confident that we can play with and beat everybody in the country."

The Bold will return after the winter break on Thursday, Jan. 6, where they will play the York Lions. Puck drop is at 6:15 p.m., and students can enjoy the game for free with their OneCard.
