WINDSOR, ONT. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's volleyball team fell to the Windsor Lancers in the first game of a weekend back-to-back on Friday evening at the Toldo Lancer Centre, 3-0.
The Bold entered the matchup fresh off of a two-week rest, with their last game being all the way back on November 1 against the Nipissing Lakers. The two teams played a back-to-back weekend series, where each team grabbed one win.
TMU looked energized in the first set, taking advantage of their many days off. They managed to hold a lead for most of the frame thanks to their potent offensive attacks.
They racked up 11 kills before their score had even reached 20, speaking to their efficiency. Most of those kills came from star outside hitter
Kaiya Krahn, along with outside hitter
Tyra Krapp. They finished with eight and 10 kills in the match respectively, the latter breaking Krapp's OUA career high.
Windsor refused to back down, though, and kept things close. Every time TMU tried to gain some momentum, they would strike back. The score in the first set didn't grow to greater than two for either side until its final moments.
The Lancers finally pulled ahead late in the frame, taking a 19-18 lead. Despite a timeout from Bold Head Coach
Dustin Reid, it was Windsor who came alive in clutch time and took set one, 25-21.
TMU came out with a vengeance in set two, taking a 7-3 lead. More kills from Krahn and second-year outside hitter
Hannah Bellai prompted a timeout from the Lancers.
After the break, Windsor brought things close again. They took a 10-9 advantage, and the score stayed within that one-to-two point range for a majority of the period.
Down 20-22 late in the frame, Krahn would come up clutch with a massive kill for TMU. The Bold's score inched closer to the Lancers', but Windsor left side Aliah Admans struck back with two kills to help propel her team to another 25-21 set win.
With their backs against the ropes, the Bold fought harder than ever in what would be the third and final frame.
The set was, as became a pattern in the match, a back-and-forth one. Windsor instantly matched any multi-point run from TMU, and vice-versa.
It was the Lancers who finally snuck ahead late, inching their way into a 21-16 lead.
The Bold weren't done yet, though, as Krapp took things into her own hands with two kills within a three-point stretch, helping TMU climb back into the set.
The run forced the Lancers to call timeout, and the Bold gained some momentum.
Despite Krapp's efforts, Windsor didn't let TMU inch any closer. A Bold service error sealed the deal, and the Lancers took set three 25-20 and the match 3-0.
The match won't be the last between these two teams this season as the second game of the weekend back-to-back between the Bold and Lancers goes down on Saturday, November 15 at the Toldo Lancer Centre, and TMU will have a chance to redeem themselves after the loss. First serve is set for 1 p.m., and fans can tune into the game live on OUA.TV.
