TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team lost against the Waterloo Warriors 4-2 in their second game this regular season.
A new day meant that the Bold had high hopes to reset after an upsetting 4-2 loss on Thursday, where things just didn't click  for the team. Despite the high hopes, the Bold were unable to see a win come to fruition.
A noticeable change in the lineup was the goaltending. After Thursday's game that saw
Kai Edmonds in net, today,
Ryan Dugas made his first appearance in net this season. Last season in the absence of
Kai Edmonds—who was battling it out for team Canada at the FISU games—Dugas stepped up posting a perfect record through four games.
In the first period, Dugas warded off an onslaught of goals with his first big save of the night stopping the initial shot with his pads before reaching back to snag the rebound shot in a display of flexibility and quick reflexes.
"One thing I know that is going to be fine is our goaltending," said Head Coach
Johnny Duco. "We've got two of the best goalies in the country and we are fortunate to have them."
He continued to display his quick reflexes on the 5-on-3, stopping many shots with the help of his fellow defencemen. He then continued to power through the rest of the power kill until the Bold were at full strength again.
Despite the Warriors taking the first goal of the game, Dugas dominated the rest of the first period, turning aside shot after shot.
"Today could have gotten out of control early if Dugas wasn't as good as he is," said Duco.
In the second period, the Bold continued to climb up on the shot count, matching the offensive pressure that the Warriors had throughout the first period.
With a penalty called on Waterloo, the Bold went on the powerplay, resulting in
Ian Martin putting the Bold on the scoreboard after firing a one-timer into the net off a pass from
Gavin Grundner.
Later in the period, the Bold saw their second goal of the game when they had a 2-on-1 chance and
Gavin Grundner, with help from
Carter MacAdams, put the Bold ahead 2-1.
Despite going into the third period, the lead did not last long. The Warriors found a way to take a 3-2 lead in spite of TMU passing Waterloo in shots on goal.
"Our forward group needs a wakeup call," said Duco. "And if they don't, we are going to be in trouble."
The Bold are off to a rocky start this season. Even with the several new great additions to the team, Â there is still some work that needs to be done in order for them to claim victory. When asked about what the team needs to focus on before next week's game, Duco's answer was simple: "hard work."
The Bold will look to bounce back next week, when they face off against the Western Mustangs on Oct. 10 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Students can attend for free with their OneCard.
