WATERLOO, Ont. — The No. 10 ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team secured the victory against the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks 4-2 in a close game.
The Bold closed out their road series in Waterloo on a high note, recording their fourth straight win away from home.
The first period saw an early penalty called on
Joseph Ianniello; however, staying true to a familiar theme this season, the Bold stood strong on the penalty kill, successfully warding off the Goldenhawks.
Despite the success on the penalty kill, the Golden Hawks found a way to open the scoring shortly after the power play ended.
Heading into the contest, in their past few games, the Bold have performed quite strongly offensively dictating the pace of the game and racking up on shots on goal. However, for the first half of the first period against the Golden Hawks, things looked a bit different for the Bold.
The Bold have had some ups and downs with their offence, but things have seen a turnaround since the first two games of the season. Coming into this game with a four-game win streak, the Bold have proven how both the offence and defence can work in tandem.
Understanding that, the Bold flipped the script in the second half of the frame and applied the pressure and the speed to force the Golden Hawks back, upping the Bold's chances of scoring.
The Bold went on the power play and fired shot after shot, but couldn't convert.
The first period ended with the Bold leading in shots on goal, but still trailing 1-0 on the scoreboard.
The Bold brought the pressure that they found late in the last frame into the second period.
The Bold found themselves on the power play with back-to-back penalties called on Wilfrid Laurier, giving the Bold a golden opportunity to even up the score. On the first power play, with a scramble in front of the net the puck found its way into the net, but it was called a no goal. On the next power play, they had another near goal, but couldn't tie up the game.
Throughout the last seven minutes of the frame, both teams ramped up the speed with a back and forth game of scoring opportunities. In a battle of goalies, the Bold came out on top with minutes left in the period. Off a pass from
Hunter Donohoe,
Will Portokalis launched the puck towards the net and it was deflected in by
Gavin Grundner.
The middle period ended with the game, tied 1-1.
The third period commenced and the Bold made the most of their next opportunity, cashing in on the power play to swing the score in their favour. After going 0-for-4 on the man advantage up to this point, the Bold broke their power play drought, with Portokalis receiving a cross-ice pass from
Joseph Ianniello, and firing a shot from the left side sniping it in the back of the net.
Despite the early breakthrough by TMU, Laurier responded late in the period, tying the game with six minutes left.
The Bold responded with two minutes left in the game, with a wraparound goal by Grundner, claiming the lead once again.
Grundner has had an impressive start to his rookie season, totaling seven points — five goals and two assists — establishing himself as a key contributor for this team.
In a final effort, the Golden Hawks pulled their goaltender, resulting in
Marko Djordjevic widening the gap and scoring on the empty net.
Proving to be a hill too high for the Golden Hawks to overcome, the game ended 4-2 for the Bold.
The Bold will return to home ice and face the University of Windsor Lancers on Saturday Nov. 1 at 4:15 p.m. Students can come and watch for free with their OneCard.
