Waterloo, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team hit the road once again to continue the start of their season, this time facing off against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. TMU ended up falling short, with a narrow 1-0 loss against Laurier.
Despite coming up short, first-year goaltender
Sydney Pyburn had a standout OUA debut, turning away a total of 39 shots.
TMU entered the game looking to bounce back after a hard-fought season opener against the Queen's Gaels, where they fell in a shootout.
The last time the Bold faced Laurier was in preseason play, when the Golden Hawks came away with a dominant 5-0 performance. However, the Bold came into today's matchup determined, ready to bring their full efforts and attempt to turn the tables.
The first period was penalty-filled, the bulk of them committed by the Golden Hawks. TMU had three consecutive power play opportunities but couldn't capitalize as Laurier's penalty kill held strong.
The Bold replied by withstanding Laurier's dominant power play pressure, after committing two late penalties. Bold goalie Pyburn was able to keep the Golden Hawks scoreless, making an impressive 17 saves in this first frame. The first period finished tied, 0-0.
The second period opened with fast-paced, back-and-forth play. The Bold's defence continued to shine, limiting Laurier's chances and clearing their zone. TMU had a few offensive looks, including one from forward
Britni Yammine, but couldn't get a shot off on goal.
After holding the Golden Hawks off for as long as they could, on their 31st shot of the game, Laurier's Hersie Lindley scored, putting them in the lead 1-0.
In the final 20 minutes, the Bold continued to generate offensive pressure. They managed two shots on goal that were both turned aside.
Laurier continued to seize control of the puck, but the Bold's defence held strong, preventing any further Golden Hawk goals, ending the game 1-0.
The Bold will continue their run on the road when they face off against the York Lions the evening of Sunday, Oct. 19. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. Catch all the action on OUA.tv.
