TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team powered their way to a narrow 1-0 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday to pick up their fifth win of the season.
The win marks the Bold's first triumph over the Ravens in five years and gets the side back into the win column after enduring a tough defeat to the nationally-ranked Ottawa Gee Gees last weekend.
"These are the wins that the program needs to get a little momentum going in to change the future," said interim head coach John Yacou after the win.
Elisa Paolucci helped carry the Bold to the halftime whistle without a blemish, stopping all five of Carleton's shots to stymie a dominant 45 minutes of action for the visitors.
The second-year goalkeeper rebounded nicely from Sunday's 4-1 defeat to the Gee Gees to keep the Bold on level terms with the Ravens. Her best stop came on Salena Devellis in the 27th minute, sticking out her right leg to take away the Ravens' best scoring chance of the half.
"Doing my part and showing up was really important to have everybody be able to relax and settle into the game," said Paolucci following the match.
She stopped all seven shots she faced and earned her third clean sheet of the season.
The Bold responded to their goalkeeper's efforts with a better attacking tempo in the early goings of the second half to shift the momentum into their favour for the first time in the match.
The group's pressure would help break the scoreless deadlock 56 minutes into Saturday's affair and lead to a historic goal for one of their rookies. Playing in just her fifth-career OUA game, first-year midfielder
Lisamarie Arangio was able to find the back of the net to throw the Bold on top of the Ravens.
Her memorable goal was impressively set up by the Bold's leading goal-scorer
Aalayah Lully, sparking Arangio on a break to the net that she would fail to relinquish.
Bearing a smile across the width of her face, Arangio was tackled to the ground by her teammates - including Paolucci, who nearly traveled the length of the field in celebration - to solidify the rookie's goal into the program's memory.
"At that moment I needed to score, we were tied, but we needed this win to be comfortable in the playoffs," said Arangio.
"I feel so comfortable with these girls…I love it here," she added.
The lonesome goal managed to be all the Bold needed to lift themselves over the Ravens despite enduring a late push and a 93rd minute shot from Ava Mills that got shut down from Paolucci before hitting the top left corner.
The Bold will look ahead to their next matchup against the Queen's Gaels next Saturday.
With instrumental players in
Kennedy Pryce and
Taliyah Walker exiting their match with the Ravens, the Bold's depth will be tested should the two be unavailable when the Bold head to Kingston in a weeks time.
