Gallagher plays double-overtime hero to lift Bold past Dinos

Carson Gallagher netted the game-winner for the TMU Bold in double-overtime to clinch a 2-1 quarter-final victory for the tournament hosts at the 2024 USPORTS National Championship.

Nearly 70-minutes of scoreless hockey separated the Bold and Calgary Dinos on Thursday before Gallagher netted the go-ahead goal to secure his side's first-ever overtime victory on the national stage.

The fourth-year forward found the top corner of Calgary's goal with a slap shot from just outside the hash marks to send the TMU faithful home happy just 4:31 into the second overtime frame.

Head Coach of the Bold Johnny Duco was pleased with the resilience of his group following the team's second double-overtime outing in the last six days.

"It's exciting. It's a huge win here on home ice and extends our season at least two more games here. We will play right to the bitter end."

The Bold fell behind the Dinos 4:40 into their quarter-final affair, surrendering an early first-period goal while forward Zach Roberts idled in the team's penalty box.

Calgary's Jaeger White broke the ice for the Dinos in the team's second-straight National Championship appearance on Thursday, finding the upper portion of TMU's net with a wrist shot from the point to grab an early edge over the Bold.

The goal screamed deja vu for the tournament hosts, with TMU giving up another opening tally while shorthanded for a second-consecutive postseason contest. The Bold found themselves chasing their Queen's Cup opponent (The 2nd seeded UQTR Patriotes) in the early stages of last weekend's OUA final after taking a bench minor 2:56 into the first frame.

Nonetheless, the Bold were able to successfully dig themselves out of their early deficit against the Dinos, receiving goal support from an unlikely lifeline on the backend.

Beating just two goaltenders throughout the entirety of the regular season, Ryan Wells evened up the quarter-final with an unthreatening wrist shot from the blue line to get one past an obstructed Carl Tetachuk in goal.

The second-year netminder had been dealing for the Dinos up until the Bold found their equalizer with 1:58 in the first, giving many of TMU's top scorers fits on the offensive side of the puck.

Kai Edmonds matched the efforts of Tetachuk between the pipes to keep his side in the hunt for a lucrative go-ahead goal over the next five periods of play. Fresh off a career-best performance that featured 48 saves from Edmonds in the league finale last Saturday, the young netminder stood tall against another potent offense within the nation by denying the Dinos at every turn.

Edmonds would shatter his career-high in saves once more, finishing his national championship debut with 51 saves and just one goal against through 84 minutes of action.

"Having a guy like [Edmonds] out there behind you as a defenseman definitely [allows] you to take more risks and play your game because you know he's going to bail you out," mentioned Wells.

The Bold will return to action on Saturday in search of victory with a spot in the National final up for grabs. The group will face off against the UNB Reds - a team in the home stretch of an unprecedented 35-0-0 campaign.

Having played the Reds twice this year throughout the preseason - and coming out as winners during the last outing in which the two teams met on the national stage - Duco understands the challenge that comes with besting such a storied program like UNB in the postseason.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves here. We know we are staring down the barrel and who's up next," said Duco.

"At the end of the day it's about us. We need to come out and play the way we can play, control the things we can control and if we do that, I feel we give ourselves a chance."

TMU's chance will arrive promptly at 1:00 p.m on Saturday. The Bold will need to put together as close of a complete game as they can to try and hand the Reds their first loss in over a year. The game will be live streamed at CBC.ca.
