Bold rally to best Badgers, advance to OUA semifinals

(ST. CATHARINES, Ont.) - This team has a flair for the dramatics. After trailing by 15 in their OUA quarterfinal match-up against Brock on Saturday afternoon, the TMU women's basketball team rallied for a 73-65 victory against the Badgers, who were previously unbeaten at home. Leading the Bold offensively was Jayme Foreman and Catrina Garvey with 23 and 21 points respectively.

The Bold, who split their season series with the Badgers at one game apiece, fell behind 10-3 early in the first. The Bold, who eliminated the Western Mustangs in the first round behind an impressive 3-point shooting display, found themselves on the other side of the equation early on in this match-up. The Badgers also utilized effective offensive rebounding to grow their lead to thirteen before a Bold timeout with 5:25 remaining in the opening frame.

Coming out of the timeout the Bold were much more aggressive defensively, instituting an early full-court press. Jayme Foreman would help reignite the Bold offense, recording five points in the quarter. After the timeout the Bold played stronger defensively as well, allowing just two points in the final five minutes of the quarter. As a result the Bold were able to cut the deficit to 18-10 after the first ten minutes, despite shooting just 21.4% from the field.

However the second quarter quickly saw the Bold's progress erased, as Brock re-established their 13-point lead in just three possessions. Further complicating matters was TMU's continued struggles shooting the ball, and the Badgers ability to force shot clock violations and other offensive miscues.

However, just like the first, a mid-quarter timeout by Bold head coach Carly Clarke helped change the momentum, allowing TMU to slowly begin chipping away at the deficit. After back-to-back successful trips to the free throw line from Kaillie Hall and Jessica Keripe, a pair of Foreman three-pointers cut the Brock lead to three, and completely changed the atmosphere inside Bob Davis Gymnasium. In the closing stages of the half Brock would convert a lay-up that pushed their lead back to five. However Catrina Garvey would nail a shot from beyond the arc of her own, sending the Bold into the break trailing by just two, at 31-29. It was an incredible result for the Bold, who had trailed by as many as 15 points just six minutes prior.

Foreman would give the Bold their first lead of the contest at 9:16 of the third quarter, with her fourth three-pointer of the contest. The Bold would quickly extend this lead, as it seemed each shot they put up found the net to start the half. Haley Fedick also played a large role in building the lead, recording three offensive rebounds in the first five minutes of the quarter.

Brock kept things close despite the Bold's hot start however, as they constantly generated trips to the free throw line behind strong drives to the paint. The Badgers also continued to rebound effectively on the offensive glass, giving them several second chance opportunities. The Bold would outscore the Badgers 22-16 in the quarter, to bring a 51-47 lead into the final ten minutes.

Brock would retake the lead just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter. It set the tone for a frantic finish. Each possession was answered almost immediately. Each missed free throw seemed especially consequential. The Bold were incredibly tenacious on defense, and forced four turnovers through the first four minutes of the fourth, helping TMU maintain their lead through the middle of the quarter.

With 3:30 to go, Garvey hit her fourth three-pointer of the game. On the next possession followed it up with a field goal jumper from the free throw line for her twenty-first point of the game to extend the Bold lead to nine. It would essentially seal the victory for the Bold, as they would close out a 73-65 victory to advance.

The Bold will face the winner of Queen's and Guelph in the OUA semifinals.
