Bold close regular season with win over Lions

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's basketball team went head to head against the York Lions in their final regular season game on Saturday night.

The York Lions have failed to score a playoff position, sitting at the bottom of the OUA division. Despite the end of the season for the Lions, they came out with all the aggression and cooked up a difficult game for the Bold.

The Bold took the lead in the opening minutes of the game, but the Lions were ready to push back on home court. The Bold quickly lost their lead to the red and white, which would be a reoccuring theme throughout the night.

Jayme Foreman and Hailey Franco-DeRyck worked hand in hand to put up points and rebounds for the Bold, but the duo still couldn't seem to surpass the home defenders.

Alex Pino's three-point shot pushed the Bold closer to the Lions. In a daring second half, Corrynn Parker was running up and down the court trying to secure points for the team. She ended the game with 10 points.

The team honoured their graduating senior Kaillie Hall on Feb. 14, and Hall was the one to put up a basket to let the Bold take a seat in the driver's seat at York.

With 21 points, Hall picked up her third personal foul of the game in the third quarter, adding some pressure to the blue and gold.

The Bold were able to tie the score at the beginning of the final quarter, but the Lions snuck past to reclaim their lead.

A nail-biting final quarter was underway and neither team was letting go of the momentum. Both squads were visibly eager to finish the season with a bang, even though the playoff road was sealed.

With under 13 seconds left on the clock, the Bold led by five points, but it was still anyone's game. The Bold stole ball possession from the Lions and were able to end off their season with a 75-68 win.

The team worked hard on the court, but the bench and coaching staff also has a big part in the development of the players.

"We have an amazing support staff," said Hall. "Ultimately just having everyone's trust I think is a huge thing. We all trust each other to put the ball in the net and go down and defend and that's all you can ask for," added the senior.

The blue and gold will host a playoff game on Feb. 21 with opponent and game details to be announced at a later date.
