WINDSOR, Ont. – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) men's hockey team returned to .500 on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Windsor Lancers 3-2 on the road. The Bold (9-9), who began the season 1-5 before righting the ship, find themselves near the top of a crowded OUA West as the first half concludes.
Jordan D'Intino opened the scoring with his second of the season, a lightning quick release off the rush which beat the Lancer goaltender. Despite the early lead, the Bold were the team under duress for much of the opening frame.Â
The Lancers equalized just over a minute after D'Intino's opener as a centring pass deflected in front, beating Kai Edmonds. Edmonds, who entered with a .907 save percentage in 13 starts, was a big part of tonight's result and has been a key contributor in the Bold's early season turnaround. The third year netminder stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced in tonight's effort.
The Bold penalty kill, which has been among the nation's most tested units, was busy throughout the second period. The Bold have found themselves shorthanded 86 times through 18 games this season. Killing penalties at an 80% clip to this point in the season, the unit was instrumental in keeping the score level until Connor Bowie restored the Bold lead late in the second.Â
Bowie's team-leading ninth goal of the year came off a rebound from a Will Portokalis shot. The lead was once again short lived however, as the Lancers equalized in the final minute of the middle frame.
Midway through the third Aleks Dimovski gave the Bold another lead, finishing a rebound in tight. Like the previous two occasions after taking the lead, TMU immediately faced danger with a four-minute minor penalty putting the Lancers on an extended powerplay to equalize.
Yet again the penalty killers came up big. The special teams' unit made several significant plays on the lengthy kill, none more important than a block by
Liam Ross on what appeared to be an open net. The Bold finished a perfect six for six on the penalty kill.
As the time wound down the Lancer pressure became more intense. Despite the Windsor push the Bold were strong defensively, punctuated by spending nearly the entirety of the final minute in the Lancer end, preventing Windsor from using the extra attacker.
The Bold begin the second half of their playoff push at home against rival Brock University on January 10th. TMU Students receive free admission with their OneCard. All home games can be streamed for free this season on OUA.tv.
