TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's volleyball squad were swept by the University of Toronto (U of T) Varsity Blues in their return to action on Friday, dropping three-consecutive sets by a score of 25-15.
Julia Murmann and Giulia Chimilovski combined for 26 of the Varsity Blues' 41 kills to emphatically guide the home side to their third win of the season. Scarlett Gingera paced the Bold attacking corps with six kills, while Hannah Bellai added five of her own against her former team.
The visitors wrapped up the evening with 28 kills on 128 attempts, by far their lowest total of the season heading into the holiday break.
The Bold began their night in a tight deadlock with the Varsity Blues courtesy of Bellai knocking down three of her side's first four kills in the opening set. U of T rallied back shortly after, stringing together a 5-1 run to force Head Coach of the Bold Dustin Reid into his first timeout while trailing 12-8.
The Varsity Blues continued to pile onto their lead, with Chimilovski heating up with three kills and the Bold committing six attacking errors to drop the first set.
A 5-0 run pushed the Varsity Blues' lead to 17-9 in the late stages of the middle set to break the game open for the home side and help take an eventual 2-0 stranglehold of the match.
By the third set, the Bold were unable to throw a wrench in U of T's momentum and mitigate their dominance. Even as their leading hitters sat on the bench, the Varsity Blues rang off a pair of 5-0 runs and two 4-0 runs to distance themselves from the Bold and take the third set in a hurry.
TMU will look to rapidly erase Friday's contest from their memory and turn their focus on landing revenge against their city rivals when the two teams face off on Saturday.
