PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - A dominant night from the baseline powered the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's volleyball squad to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-21) victory over the Trent Excalibur on Friday to secure the visitors their first win of the 2024-25 season.
The Bold capped off their sweep over the Excalibur with 13 service aces and converting on over 30 percent of their attacks on the night. Offseason acquisition Hannah Bellai led the charge for the visitors with nine kills on 23 attempts while 12 other members of the Bold picked up a kill of their own in the lopsided win.
TMU cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match to quickly push the Excalibur to the brink. Leading the home side 17-4 in the first set with the help of five service aces, the Bold struggled to power past Trent in the late stages of the opening set.
The Excalibur managed to outscore the Bold 7-1 while sitting just two points shy of falling behind in the match before a bad set by Isabelle Pellerine extinguished Trent's flicker of a comeback and pushed the Bold over the line to a 25-17 set win.
Rolling past the Excalibur in the second set, the Bold faced their toughest task of the night in the third as they looked to put a bow on Friday's win. In control for much of the set and at one point, leading the Bold 19-15, the Excalibur let the visitors inch back into the set with a six-point rally to quickly fall back behind their opposition.
With their noses in front for just the second time in the set, the Bold failed to look back, ringing off five more points in succession to dig themselves out of a jam and make easy work of the Excalibur to leapfrog them in the OUA standings after starting the season 0-2.
The Bold will look to level their record when they take on the Excalibur once more on Saturday.
