Bold Fall to No. 5 McGill

MONTREAL – In a rematch of last year's U Sports bronze medal game, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell to the McGill Redbirds by a score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The No. 5 Redbirds move to 2-2, while the Bold drop to 1-5 on the young season.

The first period was a scoreless affair, due in large part to the brilliance of Kai Edmonds. Edmonds, making his third appearance for the Bold this season, was solid in the early-going as a majority of play throughout the opening frame took place inside the Bold zone. He stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced in the loss.

McGill broke the deadlock just over two minutes into the second period, off a bad offensive zone turnover that resulted in a three-on-one for the Redbirds, giving Edmonds no chance to bail out the Bold again.

McGill doubled their lead in the second, this time via the powerplay. Entering this afternoon's contest, the Bold penalty kill operated at a 79% clip, which sat around league average in the OUA. Special teams have been a big factor in the Bold's season to this point, as nearly a quarter of all the goals TMU has conceded this year have come while short-handed.

Connor Bowie brought the Bold back to within one briefly, with a strong wrist shot beating the McGill goaltender on the rush. Just moments later however, McGill restored their two-goal cushion, kneecapping the Bold's first bit of momentum in the game.

Julian Fantino added another for the Bold with two minutes to play in the third, finishing a wraparound in tight. Despite the late push from the Bold, it was too little too late as the Redbirds added an empty net goal, giving the game its final 4-2 scoreline.

The loss puts the Bold at ninth place in the OUA East just over a quarter through the season. The top six teams in each division make the playoffs. TMU will look to get back into the win column next weekend, with a two game set against Lakehead. Watch the contest, and all the season's other matchups, on OUA.tv.
