Bold fall short to Blues in first of weekend doubleheader

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's hockey team hopped on the subway on Friday night to face city rivals, the Varsity Blues.

Both teams are looking to take home the win in the first game of their doubleheader weekend and for the first night, the Bold are at Varsity Arena.

Right into the first the Blues made a few rushes but were stopped by goaltender Lauren Griffin.

Griffin, posting a 0.908% save percentage this season finished the night with 31 saves.

The Bold spent the first period on high alert, keeping the hungry Blues far from the net.

The Bold relied on their defence to clear any huge chances but struggled to keep possession of the puck.

The first period ended with an even 0-0 score and the Bold headed to the locker room hoping to open the scoring in the second.

The Blues wasted no time in the second period and secured the first goal of the night on a power play, followed by their second goal two minutes later.

The Bold managed to record a few breakaways but lacked in shots on goal overall.

The Blues added another goal to the board making this a 3-0 game.

With five minutes remaining in the second, Griffin was put to the test and came up big.

Finally, the Bold got a break and scored, but after it was disallowed, the Blues came back fighting and scored their fourth goal.

It was all or nothing in the third and final period of the game, and the Bold were immediately on the forecheck, but Blues goalie Erica Fryer closed out the net.

The Bold struggled to break away from the Blues and ended this game on the losing side of a 6-0 scoreboard.

The Bold will be back on home ice Saturday afternoon to face the Blues once again, for their annual Do It For Daron campaign game, looking to raise money for the youth mental health organization.
