TMU drop Saturday set with Varsity Blues

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's baseball team opened up this year's subway series with the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on the wrong side of the scorecard, dropping both of Saturday's contests by scores of 6-2 and 5-4.

UofT would pick up their second win of the afternoon in walkoff style, scoring their fifth and winning run on a hit by pitch with the bases juiced.

The Bold snatched a must-needed run in the top half of the seventh to extend the contest another half inning despite being shut out offensively for six consecutive frames. TMU registered just four hits during their walk off defeat to the Varsity Blues, with the scorching hot bat of outfielder Domenic Gonzalez connecting on half of them.

Santiago Rincon helped shelter the storm for the Bold over the opening five frames, fanning just as many batters while surrendering just a single earned run. TMU picked up similar success on the bump from their reliever Matteo Forgione during Saturday's opening match. The right-hander surrendered just two hits over his four innings of action, playing an integral role in keeping the Bold within reach of their rivals.

After opening up the scoring in the top half of the first, TMU quickly fell into a 6-1 hole as the Varsity Blues quickly found their groove on the offensive side of the ball. Their four-run second inning proved to be the difference-maker in the match as both sides failed to register any momentum offensively in the coming innings.

With the pair of defeats, the Bold drop to 3-4-1 on the year and losers of three straight to their crosstown rivals. The group will now turn their attention to the York Lions as they look to salvage their weekend with a pair of wins on Sunday. First pitch from Vaughan Grove Park flies at 12 p.m.
