Bold baseball cruise to sweep of defending champions

After being blown out all throughout Saturday afternoon, The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold Men's baseball squad emphatically thrashed the defending OUA championed Queens Gaels by scores of 18-12 and 7-4.

TMU exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning during Sunday's opening contest with the Gaels, nearly turning over the lineup a pair of times on the offensive side of the plate.

Outfielder Josh Thomas found his stroke in the blowout inning, cashing in a pair of Bold baserunners following his second base hit of the afternoon. TMU's Domenic Gonzalez added another home run to his weekend total, rounding the bases for his first inside-the-park homer of the season.

Jamie Cabral, Ryan Ricci, James Markham and Armaan Memari all recorded multi-hit games in the blowout victory for the Bold. Alex Martin picked up the victory in relief, going 1 and ? with a pair of punchouts and surrendering no runs.

Martin's dominant pitching performance would live second however to the likes of southpaw Ryan Bando who secured the series sweep over the Gaels in the second game of the afternoon.

In a masterful complete-game, Bando allowed just one earned run and eight hits while managing to retire five batters via strikes. The sophomore rang off 108 pitches in the win, playing an integral role in completing the Bold's first sweep of the 2023 campaign.

On the offensive side, the Bold jumped to an early 4-0 lead before Queens managed to hang a digit of their own on the scoreboard. Ricci led the attack with a trio of hits in his four trips to the plate, while second-baseman Thomas Markus highlighted the Bold's power surge with a rocket over the left field wall.

Striking out just four times, the Bold rallied off 15 hits throughout the match en route to a momentous victory over the Gaels that is sure to send some wind in the Bold's seasonal sails.

The group will be back at Dan Lang Field next Saturday - but this time as visitors - as they take on the city-rivaled University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
