Finalists for G.L. Dobson community award released

TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold will honour its student-athletes and their accomplishments at the TMU Bold Awards on Thursday, April 13 at The Carlu.

Over the course of the next few days, tmubold.ca will highlight the finalists for all major awards as we prepare for the big night. Today, we are proud to announce the finalists for the G.L. Dobson Outstanding Contribution to Interuniversity Sport, Campus, and Community Life award.

The G.L. Dobson award is given to a female student-athlete, preferably in their graduating year, who has provided leadership and participation in a specific ongoing activity or in a collection of community and/or campus life activities. Also, this recipient is usually involved in a leadership role on a team, maintains a positive attitude both on and off the field of competition, and personifies sportsmanship.

The following Bold student-athletes (in alphabetical order) are the finalists for the 2022-23 G.L. Dobson award as determined through the awards selection process.

Jala Fraser – Soccer
Fourth year soccer player Jala Fraser has spent a lot of time giving back to her community in her hometown of Brampton. This year Fraser put together multiple clothing drives to donate to homeless shelters within Brampton and around the Greater Toronto Area. She also volunteers as a youth leader for young teens and stays connected with her former high school by volunteering as an assistant coach with their girls soccer team.

Olivia Giardetti – Hockey
A finalist for this award for a second straight year, senior hockey forward Olivia Giardetti continues to get involved in various activities in the community. Co-chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Giardetti led multiple financial literacy events for all Bold athletes to benefit from. She also serves as the VP of Finance on the MBA Sport Leadership Committee where she helped lead several events. Giardetti spearheads the women's hockey team's annual Do It For Daron (DIFD) initiative which raised $3,000 this year for youth mental health initiatives and she also volunteers with the Hockey For Youth and Big Sisters Little Sisters organizations. An assistant captain of the hockey team, Giardetti won this year's OUA True Sport award for her work in the community and sportsmanship on ice.

Jyoti Ruparell – Volleyball
Fourth year libero Jyoti Ruparell has shown to be one of the most engaged Bold student-athletes by her resume in the community. Ruparell is involved with various student groups on campus including MetPack, the TMU Indian Students Association, and the TMU Centre for Safe Sex and Sexual Violence Support. She was also instrumental in the student wellness referendum on campus, helping mobilize student-athletes to vote for improved support services. A member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Ruparell also recently launched The Outsider Project to connect minority youth in sport with U SPORTS student-athletes for mentorship.

Eve Uwayesu – Basketball
Senior guard Eve Uwayesu is a first-time finalist for this award after inspiring change and accountability in equity, diversity, and inclusion within the TMU Bold Athletics department. Uwayesu helped initiate the start of an EDI working committee within athletics, recently named TMU Belong, and is one of the founding members. The committee aims to provide recommendations and consultation for actions to enhance the recognition, education, and celebration of diverse TMU athletics staff and student-athletes.
