D.H. Craighead community award finalists announced

TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold will honour its student-athletes and their accomplishments at the TMU Bold Awards on Thursday, April 13 at The Carlu.

Over the course of the next few days, tmubold.ca will highlight the finalists for all major awards as we prepare for the big night. Today, we are proud to announce the finalists for the D.H. Craighead Outstanding Contribution to Interuniversity Sport, Campus, and Community Life award.

The D.H. Craighead award is given to a male student-athlete, preferably in their graduating year, who has provided leadership and participation in a specific ongoing activity or in a collection of community and/or campus life activities. Also, this recipient is usually involved in a leadership role on a team, maintains a positive attitude both on and off the field of competition, and personifies sportsmanship.

The following Bold student-athletes (in alphabetical order) are the finalists for the 2022-23 D.H. Craighead award as determined through the awards selection process.

Kyle Bollers – Hockey
Bollers earned the OUA's Dr. Randy Gregg Community Service Award for the second consecutive season after another year of giving back to his community. Bollers empowers youth from underserved communities to reach their educational goals and volunteers at both community organizations and as a coach behind the bench. Bollers attends the Boys and Girls Club on a weekly basis and has created "KB's Bold Crew", playing floor hockey with the local kids. He also encourages other Bold student-athletes to attend and experience giving back to the community. Bollers also works with the AAO Black Aces Learn to Play Hockey program and is a volunteer coach with a 'AAA' team to help develop the next generation of hockey players.

Liam O'Leary-Orange – Basketball
O'Leary-Orange has been a staple in the TMU community throughout his career and is a first-time finalist for this award. A two-year member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, O'Leary-Orange has embraced the importance of community work and encourages his fellow student-athletes to get involved. Captain of the men's basketball team, O'Leary-Orange is also a role model in the classroom.

Lhexen Rabit – Volleyball
Rabit is a finalist for this award for the second straight season after a continued effort to be a leader in his community. The co-chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Rabit leads his fellow student-athletes in community and leadership opportunities. This year Rabit led the volleyball team's Pride Night initiative which helped bring in a sold-out crowd at a game this February and helped contribute funds to The 519, a Toronto based 2SLGBTQ+ agency. Rabit was also the event director during TMU's Motionball event which aims to provide a fun, safe environment to celebrate the Special Olympics community.
