Varsity Blues stump Bold in 0-3 shutout

TORONTO, Ont. -- Hot goaltending stumped the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team earlier tonight, as the group were shutout by a 3-0 score to the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues.

Goaltender Madeline Albert was relentless in her 11th start of the season, stopping all 27 of TMU's shot attempts in her team's OUA-leading 21st win.

A competitive set of twenty greeted the Bold in their Saturday night affair with the nationally ranked Varsity Blues. With breathless back-and-forth action becoming a common theme in the game's initial frame, so too did the constant ringing of the goal posts that saw both the Bold and Blues combine for four near misses.

Erika Crouse became the first victim of the cage in the opening minutes of play, slinging a shot just below the glove of Albert before striking the red iron.

On the defensive side of the puck, goaltender Lauren Griffin steered aside all ten of UofT's shots, while playing an integral role in the Bold's momentous 5-on-3 penalty kill midway through the frame.

TMU ran into penalty trouble once more in the early stages of the middle stanza, with Griffin unable to keep the game's scoreless bid alive while shorthanded.

Varsity Blues defender Caroline Eagles made quick work of the Bold on her side's third powerplay of the evening, sending a blue-line blast past the Bold netminder to take the lead.

UofT would double their advantage in the late stages of the frame and on the powerplay nonetheless. Forward Kaitlyn McKnight sought out a wild scramble within the Bold crease, coming out of the traffic with her hands in the air and a goal to her name to bring UofT's lead to two.

Four of the period's six penalties would put the Bold shorthanded, with the team spending nearly half the middle stanza in the sin bin. As a result, the blue and gold were unable to find any sort of rhythm offensively and headed into the second intermission staring down a zero on the scoreboard.

The visitors would turn on the pressure throughout the final period of play and push the Varsity Blues to the brink. Megan Breen took charge of the team's most dangerous look of the frame, sliding a shot through the legs of Albert, but failing to sneak it towards the back of the cage.

Lauren Omoto would seal the deal on her side's 16th consecutive win with an empty net tally to snap TMU's two-game winning streak. The Bold will be back in action next Friday when they take on the York Lions on the road. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m.
