Bold unable to solve Incze, fall to Gryphons

The scoring sticks dried out for the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team in their Friday night tilt with the Guelph Gryphons, falling 2-0 to the ninth place side.

Gryphon's goaltender Colton Incze had TMU's number all night long, posting a 41-save shutout in his side's dominant win.

"We came out flat, we were sluggish. We weren't sharp." said head coach of the Bold Johnny Duco.

In a similar stance to their previous pair of matchups against the Bold this season, the Gryphons beat the blue and gold to the scoreboard and off the heels of their dominant offensive play nonetheless.

Forward Ted Nichol snapped his season-long goalless drought in the dying minutes of the frame to record the opening tally for the home side. The powerplay marker would be quickly followed up by a pair of chiming posts, ringing from the blasts of Chris Playfair and Kevin Gursoy respectively to keep TMU off the scoresheet.

"Our execution was nowhere near where it needed to be," said Duco.

Very little would change for the Bold throughout the middle stanza however, as the sedated side continued to fight the puck on both ends of the ice. Rookie netminder Kai Edmonds spent much of the period stretching the width of his crease to keep the relentless Gryphons attack from doubling their lead.

"He did more than give us a chance to win tonight," said Duco, adding that he was disappointed in seeing his star goalie come away from the game empty handed.

With very little to show on the offensive side of the puck, the Bold continued to hang a zero on the scoreboard as the period inched forward. The group came close to penetrating the wall of Incze, but would be turned aside by the referee as a trickling puck failed to cross the Gryphons goalline.

In spite of the call, TMU turned their focus to a pivotal final frame in an attempt to even up the score. The group tested the Gryphons goaltender in the early stages of the period, sending shot after shot with no prevail on the scoreboard.

Between the pipes, Incze continued to deliver for the home side and played an integral role in thwarting the Bold's attack over the course of the period.

Guelph would seal the deal on their seventh win of the season in the dying seconds of the game, with Zachary Poirier sliding home the empty net tally to bring a sluggish end to the Bold's chance at a season sweep.

TMU will look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon when they face off against the Western Mustangs. Puck drop is set for 3:00.
