Series shifts back to the MAC after Bold shutout Blues in game two

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team will live to see another day, dominating the Toronto Varsity Blues from start to finish to pick up their first postseason win of 2023.

Goaltender Kai Edmonds stole the show in the penultimate game of the subway series, steering aside all 27 of the shots he faced to help send the Bold back home in high spirits.

"He was our MVP tonight…He played fantastic," said head coach of the Bold Johnny Duco.

"He seems to come up clutch when we need him most," added lonesome goal scorer Kevin Gursoy.

Staring down elimination right in the face, the Bold opened up their do-or-die affair with the Varsity Blues with vigilance on both ends of the puck.

With the prominent presence of the Varsity Blues top line overhauling much of the offensive workload midway through the frame, TMU mindfully picked out the opportune time to strike the hot hand of goaltender Jett Alexander.

That golden chance would be swept up by Gursoy who wasted no time in beating Alexander for the game's early edge. For the second time this series, Patrick Fellows played a role in the tenacious buildup to TMU's tally, registering a secondary assist while falling towards the ice.

"We felt it was really crucial for us to play with the lead…to see us play with that kind of urgency while our backs are against the wall was really encouraging," said Duco.

First-year forward Daniel D'Amico found himself inches away from doubling the Bold's score in the early stages of the middle stanza as well. Despite his shot being met with the stick of Alexander to marginalize the Blues deficit, the dangerous look at goal sparked an offensive arousal within the blue and gold that stuck around for the majority of the middle frame.

The visitors lined up their chances at the doorstep of the Blues goal, but failed to thread the needle on any of their lethal looks. On the other end of the ice however, Edmonds continued to prove his worth between the pipes for TMU.

Not only did the rookie steer aside all nine of the Blues shot attempts during the frame, Edmonds continuously extinguished the firepower of UofT's offensive unit in highlight-worthy fashion.

His post-to-post save while undermanned capped off a necessary rebound match for the youngster fresh off his third four-goal game of the campaign. The response was felt throughout the Bold's lineup and personified in the way the group dealt with their crosstown rivals throughout the second half of game two.

"I had to do my part and make every save I can to keep the guys in the game," said the Bold netminder.

In a similar stance to the rest of the match, the biggest closing period of the Bold's season was handled with steadiness and maturity. Both skills assisted TMU mightily in putting the Varsity Blues in the rearview mirror and came up crucial in the final pair of minutes in the frame.

With all of the possession sitting in the Bold's defensive end, the team blocked and boxed the Blues out of danger to help drain the clock. By the time the dust settled, it would be the blue and gold leaving the ice with a win in hand after successfully downing the Blues by the slimmest of margins.

The group will look to reset the expiration date on their season tomorrow evening when they face off with the Varsity Blues on home soil. Puck drop for game three is set for 4:00 p.m.
