Bold close out regular season with win against division leading Badgers

TORONTO, Ont. The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team closed out the 2022-23 regular season on a high note Saturday night in a 74-63 win against the Brock Badgers.

The Badgers got off to an early lead to open the first quarter. TMU was quick to catch up however, after two simultaneous three-pointers and a second-chance shot from team captain Aaron Rhooms

The quarter saw the team driving to the rim to rack up points and gaining the lead. In the second, the Bold were leading by double digits and maintained their gap in scoring through to the half.

Brock went on a run in the third. The Badgers both outrebounded and outscored the Bold, cutting the once 15-point deficit down to a two-possession game.

In the fourth, the Badgers had cut the lead down to three after an unanswered six points, and then whittled it down to two. Fortunately, TMU maintained composure and managed to make another few baskets, ultimately claiming the victory in their last game of the regular season.

The win follows a late loss in the fourth quarter to the opposing team Friday evening in St. Catharines, the first game in the doubleheader.

"We took a tough loss last night but I thought if we came out today and gave that same kind of defensive effort, we'd be in good shape tonight," head coach Dave DeAveiro said. "Brock is extremely physical and extremely talented, and we had a lull where we couldn't score tonight, and you just have to play through that and trust your defence."

Rhooms put on a clinic on the court, offensively. The captain tallied 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals throughout the night.

"I think we're one of the top teams right now," Rhooms said. "We proved it tonight and we proved it before versus Carleton and others. I'm excited to see how far we can take it."

The OUA postseason schedule will be announced Sunday, with the Bold's first playoff game falling on Wednesday evening. More to come on postseason details.
