Edmonds posts shut out in regular season finale

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team wrapped up their regular season with a 5-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night at the CIF Arena.

The blue and gold's offensive firepower was on full display as five different goal-scorers contributed to the tally to help snap their three-game skid. On the other end, Kai Edmonds stopped all 30 shots en route to a shutout — his first of the season.

After Warriors netminder Julian Sime looked sharp early in the first period, the Bold found their answer with less than a minute remaining in the opening frame. Kevin Gursoy started the downpour with a wrist shot that beat Sime top shelf.

54 seconds later, Evan Tanos poked home a loose puck for his first career OUA marker and to double the Bold lead heading into the first intermission.

The Warriors pushed to put themselves on the board in the middle frame, however, another late-period goal for the Bold tripled the deficit. While on the power play, Chris Playfair attempted to stuff a puck behind Sime, which resulted in the puck bouncing off a few skates and into the net. Daniel D'Amico – who returned to the lineup from injury after missing the previous two games — has credit for the goal at the time of publication.

TMU's offensive awakening continued in the third with Jesse Barwell and Dustin Hutton adding tallies within two minutes of each other to make it a five-goal lead. The insurance goals put the game to rest as the Bold finished off their season with a victory.

The five-goal output for the Bold should rejuvenate their offence after being outscored 6-1 in a two-game road swing against the Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs last week.

TMU also is beginning to come back to health for the playoffs as, in addition to D'Amico, Aaron Hyman returned to the lineup from injury — playing in his first game of 2023.

Earlier in the week, TMU was locked into a playoff matchup against crosstown rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Bold also secured home-ice advantage in the best-of-three series as the OUA returns to the pre-COVID playoff format.

Round one of the playoffs is scheduled to begin on Feb. 15, 2023.
