Bold remain unbeaten on home ice with shutout victory over Ottawa

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold men's hockey team battled the Ottawa Gee-Gees for a victory on home ice in a Thursday night game. The national championship hosts are on a four game winning streak and undefeated at home, something that they struggled with last season.

"Well last year we were really bad at home and we've made a very intentional effort to protect home ice in that we're going to beat some really good hockey teams in this building at the national tournament this year," said head coach Johnny Duco.

The game started off with the Bold and Gee-Gees fighting for possession. Two shots on goal for the Gee-Gees were stopped by Bold goalie Kai Edmonds, which carried on the tie game.

The Gee-Gees' Vincent Labelle was quick with an offensive attack, but the Bold swooped in to steal the puck back in possession. The home team were scoreless with seven minutes to go in the first period despite earning a power play.

A few shots and body checks later, the first period ended scoreless and it was either team's game.

"I think for us it was a little bit of a slow start but I think both ways the puck was bouncing a bit and it just wasn't a clean first period. I think [Ottawa] came out and they outplayed us a bit in the first but we were able to kind of hold tight, that bend don't break mentality," added Duco.

The visiting Gee-Gees started the second period off strong, but Edmonds and the defence didn't let them get past the fort they had built.

The Bold were able to catch up to the garnet and grey's offence but were still chasing the puck slid into the Bold bench.

After a long awaited effort, Moscow's finest, Daniil Grigorev, snuck the puck into the Gee-Gees goal with assistance from forwards Kyle Bollers and Ian Martin. This goal marks the rookie's fifth dressed in blue and gold.

"It feels pretty good. Just working hard and preparing for nationals," said Grigorev.

A swift flick of the stick from Ryan Wells continued the Bold's possession. The period ended well for the Bold in a 1-0 score, but they still had one more period to defend and try to add to their score before they could claim victory.

With a target on his back, two back to back saves from Edmonds hushed the Gee-Gees desperate cries for a goal.

"I think just taking it, for me, save by save and just focusing on the puck and every opportunity that [Ottawa] has and just doing everything in my power to keep it out of the net," said the goalie.

With the end in sight, the Gee-Gees couldn't put up a goal, but Bollers could so he did. He scored his tenth goal of the season into an empty net. The night ended with the Bold leaving the Mattamy Athletic Centre content with their 2-0 victory.

The squad doesn't have much time to rest as they will take on the Carleton Ravens on Friday on home ice. Puck drop on Pride Night is set for 7:15 p.m.
