Bold baseball surrender crushing loss to Varsity Blues to end season

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) men's baseball squad's season came to a close this past weekend, falling to the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues in the OUA Central Division Finals.

After punching their ticket to the finals with a 2-1 showing on the weekend, the Bold would fall to their crosstown rival in just five innings after suffering a 23-7 loss. With the defeat, TMU has now lost consecutive OUA Central Finals to the Varsity Blues by a combined score of 47-11 over the last three seasons.

TMU trailed the Varsity Blues 4-1 after the first inning on Sunday, but found a way to string hits and runs together to take a 6-5 lead into the top half of the third. From there on out, the Blues' bats caught fire and failed to show any signs of cooling off as the game inched forward.

UofT hung half a dozen runs in the top end of the third inning to kickstart their beatdown over the Bold. A three-run fourth and nine-run fifth silenced any chance of a comeback for TMU and quickly brought their season to a close.

TMU secured wins against the Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions in their first and third games on the weekend. The Bold fell to the Varsity Blues 9-8 to pick up their lonesome loss of group play on Saturday afternoon.

Bold pitcher Scott Hynes picked up a memorable performance to help grab his side a spot in the regional finals with an 11-strikeout complete game against the Lions on Sunday morning. Hynes surrendered just a trio of hits and was by far TMU's biggest bright spot of the weekend.

With the season now at the close, the Bold will look to address their needs both internally and externally throughout the offseason. The group will be without eight of their veterans once the 2024 campaign kicks off next September - having lost pitchers Kit Corsini, Lucas Dirienzo and Gus Cousins, as well as positional players in Domenic Gonzalez, Daniel Cote, Wil Nenadovic, Thomas Markus, Matteo Forgione to graduation.

The Bold have never advanced to the final weekend of the OUA season throughout its ten-year history. Reaching that mark remains the sole objective for the team heading into next season.
