Bollers shorthanded winner helps Bold sweep opening weekend

WATERLOO, Ont. - It was a hard-fought 3-1 win on Saturday night in Waterloo for the men's hockey team that pushed their early season record to 2-0-0. The win was the result of solid goaltending and a spectacular short-handed goal late that allowed the Bold to pull away.

It was a fast start to the contest that saw the Bold fall behind early, with a wrister from the point beating a screened Kai Edmonds. Edmonds would be perfect the rest of the way, stopping 21 shots on the night.

TMU would respond to the early deficit quickly, after a high-sticking penalty shortly after the opening tally gave the Bold a power play. Carson Gallagher would clean up a rebound down low to tie things up at one apiece, and in the process recording his first career OUA goal.

The teams traded opportunities the rest of the period with neutral zone turnovers in particular plaguing the Bold. These turnovers created multiple odd-man rushes for the Warriors, which were broken up with strong defensive play from Bold defencemen.

The Bold would see their best opportunity to take a lead into the second in the final minute of the opening frame, with an Aaron Hyman rush creating a scramble in front of the Warriors goal. Multiple great saves were made, as a sea of yellow and blue jerseys crowded the Waterloo crease. The puck was ultimately cleared by the home side, and the score remained even as the teams headed into the break.

The second period was played at a rapid pace with both teams trading rushes and opportunities, but neither were able to find the back of the net. After 40 minutes TMU led in shots 20-11, a result of preventing the Warriors from establishing continuous offensive pressure. In particular, the Bold excelled in the faceoff dot in their own end winning the majority of draws throughout the contest, limiting the ability for Waterloo to set up offensively off of faceoffs.

In the third, early Waterloo pressure mounted as they outshot the Bold 10-2 in the opening stages of the frame. Edmonds answered the call, as the Waterloo forecheck and pinching defencemen in the neutral zone prevented the Bold from effectively breaking out and keeping much of the play inside TMU's defensive end.

As time wound down in the 3rd an undisciplined spear away from the play with about nine minutes to go put TMU on the penalty kill, forced to kill a double minor. The result was a four minute stretch in which the Bold generated the better chances, with Kyle Bollers creating multiple opportunities single-handedly by forcing turnovers from the Waterloo defence.

He was relentless on the penalty kill, and would not be denied the game-winner. It would eventually come off a nifty pick-pocketing of a Waterloo defenceman, leading to a partial breakaway that he finished low-blocker side with 6:30 to go. It was a cathartic goal for the Bold, who, despite some mistakes, had been the better team for the majority of the night.

The Bold would kill the remaining minute of the penalty, playing solid defensively, and not affording Waterloo any opportunities for the equalizer. Aaron Hyman would add an empty net goal cementing the win and an opening weekend sweep for the Bold.

The Bold will look to continue their winning ways next Thursday in Toronto against the Varsity Blues on the University of Toronto campus.
