Penalties sink Bold against Queen's

KINGSTON, Ont. - Undisciplined play early in the second period was the difference, as three Queen's power play goals helped carry them to a 7-2 win on Saturday night in Kingston over the Bold. Kevin Gursoy had two goals in the losing effort as the Bold move to 4-2-0 on the season.

Kai Edmonds had a strong start to the game with stretches where he bailed out frantic defensive play. His best stretch came roughly five minutes into the first when he had several multi-save sequences that helped keep the game scoreless in its early stages. The Gaels' strong cycle play kept tired TMU defenders on the ice throughout the night, and resulted in 21 first period shots for Queen's.

As a result of Edmonds strong start, there was little separating the two squads on the scoreboard in the opening frame. The former division rivals (from OUA's Mid-East division during the 90's and 2000's) played a chippy contest throughout their only meeting of the season, exemplified by several post-whistle scrums and open-ice hits from pinching defencemen.

These over-aggressive defencemen would eventually bite both teams. TMU would strike first, with Kyle Bollers finding Kevin Gursoy on a 2-on-1 to open the scoring. Queen's would quickly respond with a power play marker just a minute later, however, the result of interference from a TMU defenceman stepping up.

The power play would strike again for Queen's early in the second, as a point shot found its way through a sea of blue and gold jerseys to beat Edmonds. The TMU parade to the penalty box would continue, as the Bold played essentially the first six minutes of the second period shorthanded. This would result in another Queen's tally giving the Gaels a 3-1 lead, with all of the goals coming on the power play.

Gursoy would get his second of the night on a TMU power play to draw the Bold closer. Similar to the first goal, the Bold would give it right back just one minute later as the Gaels restored their two goal advantage. The Gaels would add a fourth goal in the middle stanza, putting their lead at 5-2 entering the third.

In the final frame, Queen's would add a goal early to effectively ice the game. As the game wound down, the physicality ramped up. Big hits were exchanged by both teams, culminating in a large shoving match around Edmonds following a hard drive to the net by Queen's. Scrums would continue as the final buzzer drew closer. The Gaels would add one final goal, cementing the final score at 7-2.

The Bold are back in action on Thursday in Waterloo to take on Wilfrid Laurier before they return to home ice on November 4 against York.
