Bold eliminated from playoff contention after loss to Carleton

OTTAWA - It was a weekend in which the TMU women's soccer team needed to grab points but were unable to do so against tough competition. Sunday's 2-1 loss against a good Carleton Ravens side ended their playoff hopes as they enter the final weekend. The loss puts the Bold's record at 3-7-3, good for 7th place in the OUA East standings and six points shy of the next closest team. The top six teams of each division qualify for playoffs.

The playoff-bound Ravens' won a penalty in the first minute on a controversial call, but Abby Harrison made an incredibly important stop on the ensuing to keep things level early. Carleton continued to pressure in the match's early stages, but Harrison repeatedly answered the call with several acrobatic saves.

The continued pressure would eventually beat Harrison and the Bold defence, as the Ravens capitalized on a rebound that put them up 1-0 in the 12th minute.

Following the opening goal, the game continued to be played at a rapid pace and remained physical throughout. Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene forced several corner kicks for the Bold as TMU developed sustained possession in the Carleton half, searching for the equalizer.

After the Ravens extended their lead on an impressive set play pushing their lead to 2-0, the Bold desperately needed something positive to go their way entering the second half. They would be gifted a much-needed goal late in the first, as a Lizzie Farsang cross deflected off a Carleton defender and into the Ravens net. After being unable to generate many opportunities on goal throughout the half, the Carleton own goal put a second half comeback within reach for a Bold side in need of a win.

With Toronto's win over Laurentian earlier in the afternoon, TMU needed a strong second half to maintain control over their own destiny in the OUA playoff race. Aalayah Lully, who played a strong first half, continued her good play in the second half. She drew multiple Carleton defenders to her, opening lanes and creating opportunities for teammates to find an equalizer.

Abby Harrison continued to stand on her head, keeping the deficit at one in the early minutes of the second half. Given Carleton's strong defensive play, a two goal lead for the Ravens seemed insurmountable for a TMU side that threw everything they could offensively against Carleton.

The equalizer would not materialize for the Bold as Carleton defenders clogged up the midfield. This limited the ability for the Bold's playmakers, Ivymae Perez and Maria Poveda, from distributing the ball effectively. As the Bold committed more players forward, hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive, Carleton did a good job of playing balls to open areas forcing the Bold to desperately chase. In the end the clock would wind down, eliminating the Bold from playoff contention.

TMU takes on the Trent Excalibur next Sunday, in Toronto, for the season finale. Join us at 1:00 p.m. from Downsview to celebrate the seniors and the season the team has had.
