Lakers overcome Bold in season opener

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The TMU Bold fell 3-1 against a relentless Nipissing Lakers' attack in the season opener from North Bay on Saturday night. TMU battled well against an impressive Lakers' squad that limited the Bold's opportunities, and controlled the pace of play.

The first period was largely played in the Bold's defensive zone, with an onslaught of shots facing goaltender Lauren Griffin, who stopped all 15 shots they saw in the first. However, the Bold defence disrupted the Lakers' shooting lanes, forcing many of Nipissing's prime scoring opportunities wide of goal.

TMU would be rewarded for their resilient defensive play and solid goaltending later in the period. An impressive shot from Emily Baxter beat the Nipissing goaltender glove side, and gave the Bold a 1-0 lead they would carry into the second period.

The Bold would begin the second period shorthanded, following a hooking call in the waning moments of the first. The penalty kill would surrender the equalizer on a scramble in front of the net, swinging momentum back in the Lakers' favour.

As play continued in the second, Baxter, looking for her second of the night, hit the crossbar. The puck ricocheted out of play and brought the faceoff to the neutral zone. Off the ensuing draw Nipissing would generate an odd-man rush, leading to their second goal of the game and giving them a lead they would not relinquish. It was a tough result for a Bold team that had responded well after conceding the tying goal. Nipissing would go on to add a third goal in the period off a breakaway with 2:22 remaining, giving them a two goal lead entering the final frame.

In the third the Bold searched desperately for equalizers but were unable to generate substantial opportunities early on against an impressive Nipissing defence. The Lakers, who did not register a shot for the first 15 minutes of the period, were content to play the game along the boards and in the neutral zone. TMU's comeback chances were boosted by consecutive Laker penalties midway through the final frame. Tori Butler generated the best opportunities on the power plays that would ultimately fail to convert. The Lakers would add an empty net goal putting the Lakers up 4-1, and sealing a Nipissing victory.

The team looks to rebound next Friday, Oct. 20 against Western with live coverage across Bold social media accounts beginning at 7 p.m.
